Don't scan from the Canoscan toolbar. Use an imaging program (I used Picasa), import from the Canoscan, and Scangear opens up. In the settings for Scangear, you can choose positive or negative film (use positive for slides). You can keep using Scangear, or after using it once, you'll see it has corrected the problem with the toolbar

An image was repeatedly scanned with the Canoscan 4000f and now is always there without it being on the glass plate. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software. But to no avail. The image remains visible with every other image I scan.
