IBM T41 Thinkpad, not working properly

I have an IBM T41 Thinkpad. The problem i'm having is sometimes it can be turned on and sometimes is doesn't. When it does turn on after 5mins it freezes and sometimes you can see lines on the screen. At other times, it will remain on for a few hours.

Please assist. thanks

I have the same problem described exactly in the original post. Initially, I thought it had to do with the hard drive (specifically with the motion-detection auto pause). So I thought it was a hardware problem. I restart, and if it works (!!!), then I choose to 'Start with last known good configuration,' then it appears to go though a process of deleting corrupt files, and it is ok for a while; Until of course, it happens again. However repeating the process just mentioned does work. So I want to know how I am accumulating corrupt or bad files? All of the scans in the world seem to not find anything.
I can't tell if these are related, but all the trouble seemed to start when I downloaded a Java upgrade (about 6 months ago).
Strangely, I can slam the computer on my desk, or shake it, or press hard on the palmrest containing the hard drive during boot, and it works just fine. So I am at a loss to describe this as either a hardware or software issue.

I want to remove bios password from IBM thinkpad t41

It is difficult to remove the Power On and BIOS password because the passwords are stored on an EEPROM chip.
For instructions on how to remove these passwords go to this link.

My IBM thinkpad turns off when i insert my usb internet connection into the usb slot and then wont turn on for a day or 2. What could this be?

It sounds like some sort of power drain or short on the motherboard. I recently made a repair job on a T41,casing on an IBM thinkpad T40 AND T41`S are very week.
My advice to you would be reinstall windows and see if it does it again,If it doesn`t then you will know for sure that it had something to do with windows.IF it still does after a clean installation of windows then its clearly a hardware fault.
*Hardware fault could be you`re power supply not giving enough juice(unlikely) *Motherboard faulty/Or Shorting somewere. If thats the case then a refurbished motherboard would do the trick.

Ibm thinkpad no power with ac power adapter but works with battery

If prior to this it works intermittently with the AC adapter, it means the connection from the adapter power unit to the motherboard was lost and this is a typical problem with the Thinkpad. It needs a re-soldering job and not something that one can do without a proper repair manual on how to open the laptop. Try googling your problem and find out if someone has the same experience and managed to resolder by him/herself.

Saw exactly the same think on another t41 i was trying to fix. If it was moved at all screen went off.

Turned out it was corrosion on the motherboard that was causing the problem.

Has it been liquid damaged or got damp in the past?
