Humming is normally caused by a failed start capacitor.
Smoke would normally be the motor or wiring, but I am a little puzzled by the smoke inside the machine, and can only think there is a gap on the top of the drum to the top panel.
In all likelihood, you need a new motor, but due to the cost of them, I would suggest getting a service tech in. Or you could remove the motor and take it to a local electric motor sales and repair outlet and ask if they can test the capacitor and motor.
Probably washer is smart enough to detect the out of balance.
Try to distribute the clothes in a balanced maner as soon as you detect it is out of balance.
I have a he gtup270emww washer used very little. The washer was overloaded and quit working full of heavy wet clothes and water. The washer agitator does not operate. The water does not drain.
The light blinks. I have un plugged the washer to reset the motor and lifted and closed the lid 7 times. I drained the water by hand.
When I try to operate the washer, it adds water for 30 seconds, the water shots off and the green light blinks.
Make sure your wire harness is plugged into the motor securely and also inspect the pins on the motor to make sure they aren't bent and make sure the motors part number match up with the old motor along with the different wires if its the wrong motor which a parts house can by mistake order the wrong one it wont work. Also does this washer have the electronic control board with the lights at the top or a led screen? If so might not be the motor might be a bad control board. I will stand by if you have further questions.
The motor has an inverter on top of it with an idiot light. It blinks codes. Remove the front cabinet and observe the blinks so you can get an idea what the problem might be. Use this GUIDE
This is the electronic washer. Unplug for two minutes, plugin then open and close lid 7 times. This will reset motor. Also make sure belt is not broken.
It sounds as if your motor may have locked. Remove the lower service plate, visually inspect the motor and housing. Try to start the washer, while looking at the motor. If there is no motor movement, Turn off washer, and try to free the impellor. More than likely it is stuck and needs a little help turning
gnarly, do you have the updated motor, harness and start cap? If it goes into spin and does this chunk a chunka chunka bit. Take a meter to the white and white/red wire going to the motor. If you have a steady 120V, replace the motor with the new kit. What the motor is doing is jogging between high to low speed. Catriver..post back.
