To access the door handle mounting screws on MOST microwave ovens, you have to remove the inner door panel that goes around the perimeter of the glass. You can use a small screwdriver to carefully pry the plastic up and work your way slowly around the perimiter of the glass. Most microwave ovens also have grooves in the panel that you can insert the screwdriver into. Use care not to pry against the glass. The glass is tempered and also has an RF shield that prevents harmful microwaves from potentially harming the consumer. If you break the glass, you will need to purchase a new door.

The door handle screws are located behind the inner panel. Simply remove the broken handle and install the new one. Re-insert the inner door panel carefully and gradually work your way around the perimeter of the door glass and make sure it snaps back into place.

This repair can be done with the door in place, or you can remove it for easier access. If you decide the remove the door, simply open it all the way and lift straight up at the hinges. The door will lift off of the hinge pins. Place on a hard flat surface with some towels under it for padding. This protects the door facing from scatches.

If you have any questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: If you need a diagram, pcappplaincerepair.com has some excellent exploded view illustrations you can refer to for assistance. If you haven't purchased a new door handle yet, the part number is WB15X10022.

SOURCE: BROKEN HANDLE FOR GE MODEL JVM1340WW002

Odd that we both have the same problem on the same model and same day..
If it's completely broken off, then you have probably pulled the threads out of the cheap plastic,, there are two screws that hold the handle on, one is easy to find/see, on the inside of the door, upper left corner,, to find the other, you need to remove (gently/carefully) the plastic bezel,, (all of this stuff is on the inside of the door), tap on it to find the plastic part,(bezel) and gently remove it by prying,, "prying" is an ugly word,, but since it snaps in, I'm not sure how else to tell you how to do it,, (Just go slow)
Once the bezel is removed, you can get to the other screw,
Now you have both screws, and know where they are supposed to fit later,,
On the back of the handle, the part that goes against the door, there are "studs" (plastic posts about 1/2 inch long and about the size of a pencil),, look closely into hole in the mounting stud, and you will probably see where the plastic threads have pulled out,, If thats the case,, the fun starts,,,

Go to lowes, or Home depot, and buy the smallest bottle of "Loctite" brand epoxy you can find,,
Look closely and the box will say something like,, "SETS IN 5 MIN.", or so,, get the LONGEST setting epoxy that they have,,

Now your back home and drinking a cold beer,, and ready for fun,, ---,Spray the screws with "non-stick" cooking spray, and set aside, (but handy)
Next,, match the handle back up to the door,, and identify which is the top,, mark it,, (masking tape and magic marker),,
I know it sounds silly, but you don't want to be fumbling around with it, while the epoxy runs back out of the holes and all over everything,, set the handle aside, but handy,,

Follow the instructions on the box, to mix the epoxy,, (work quickly)
Now,, using a toothpick or something similar,(disposable) dribble the mixed epoxy into the holes, (where the screws need to go), you don't need to fill them up, but a good 5 drops or so at least,,, WORK QUICK,,, remember to put it in both holes,,

Get ready to mate it back to the door, handle in one hand, a screw in the other,,
Top on top,, and from the front,,put the studs into the two holes
and as quick as you can, insert the screws,, you probably won't need to screw them in, (Threads are stripped out), but you may,, if so, just barely tighten them, just enough to "seat them, and the handle to the door,, It would be best to tape the handle in place until the epoxy sets,,
Check for ozzing,, dribbles, and drops,, and wipe it up now,, or it will be there forever,,
Sit back, put feet up, drink the rest of the beer, and watch epoxy dry,,, (Wait an hour to be safe) Besides, it gives ya more time to drink some more beer,,
Thats my best guess on how to re-attach the handle,, But I'm waiting until tomorrow to do it,, (out of beer)
Best of luck, Ted

SOURCE: Broken handle

1) Have to remove the door first; top of the oven there are two screws closest to the door, take those out. and the door should lift out
2) flip the door on the table with the handle side down. starting on the handle side there are three clips (top, middle, and bottom) between the outside casing and inside trim. Using a thin screwdriver gently twist starting at either the top or bottom to pod the two casings apart. work your way around the door.
3) You should see one of the screws that hold the handle on (top) but the bottom screw is under the metal casing so you need to remove the screws around this casing as well to get the other handle screw off.
Once you start you will see it isn't as bad as this sounds. I bought the handle for $40.
It is a shame that this is so cheap and breaks off this easily. Surprisingly we have had ours for at least 6 years before the handle broke and we have 3 girls opening and closing this all the time so I guess I was one of the lucky ones.
Hope this helps and good luck

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

You are correct. The handle screws can be accessed by simply removing the interior facing of the door, and can easily be replaced without the assistance of a repairman. This is a common problem with some microwave oven doors.

Under microwave lights stoped working for GE JVM1660SB 005

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid with a one year guarantee.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan, cooling fan, turntable, and/or inside light operation, too.

Details of our service are at our Web site, along with a video showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

You have to remove the door handle screw(s) and the door handle, then look for subtle clips that may be holding the outer door screen in place.

Some models have two screws holding the door handle, but some have only one. In that case, remove the screw, then you either lift or rotate the handle to free it.

I have a GE Profile Microwave and the handle is broken....

I have the same issue. The Handle broke off my GE Microwave Oven (Model JVM1190SY 001). GE does not sell the handle seperately from what I can tell. I just ordered a new door. It's rediculously expensive. I tried to replace the handle with a nice drawer pull but couldn't find a size pull to match and I broke the plastic cover trying to get access to the screws for the handle, which is why I decided to buy the new door. Hopefully installation is not that difficult. This oven was manufactured in 2001, seems the handles have a 7 year life span.

Hi - I also have GE profile spacesaver and the handle broke on the bottom only, did not want to spend money on a new handle. Put clear silicone make sure you put enough on and masking tape to hold it overnight has not come off in over a year, any ecess silicone just remove it with hands. Cheap and excellent solution.
