I am not sure if you are trying to simplify the expression or what....

The common denominator for this problem is 40.

2-1/5 becomes 88/40 (5 * 8 = 40, so 8*1 = 8, 8 +2 * 40 = 88)

and 3-1/8 becomes 125/40

You can now rewrite the equation as (88/40) * (125/40) = x

or (88 * 125) / 40/40) = x

that gives you 11000/40/40 = x

x = 275/40 as a fraction, which can be reduced to 55/8 by dividing both part by 5.

or x = 6.875 as a decimal
