Linksys routers come with 192.168.1.1 as the default IP address for the router. Here's a good article on changing the IP addresses within Linksys.

Why - are you set up for static addresses??? Let the routers manage themselves in this respect.

If you must change it, get Network Magic free down load of eval version. Read the deal at the website.

I use the pro version and I love it ... but IO let the modem and routers (I have 5 in my network) manage themselves.

I am not a Cisco employee

I hope you will get this software. It will make your network duties simple.

Please check on the status tab that the what is the internet ip address you are getting from the page.
The ip adress is if 192.168.1. then you have to change the router ip address to 192.168.2.1 on the very first page setup under the router ip address.

I have problem setting up my wireless network and redirecting my wireless client to my local webpages before they can access to internet.   see this diagram below :...

you need to replace your modem with a router that is capable of running Network Address Translation. You are trying to route private IP's (192,168.x.x) over the public IP (internet) network.

I need to change my NAT settings from moderate to open and dont' know how to do that.

A. Determining the IP Address and MAC Address of a Computer: Note: Please use the computer for which the Ports are to be opened: For Windows 2000/XP users: 1. Please click on Start and select Run. 2. Type in cmd and click on OK. 3. In the Command Prompt, please type ipconfig/all then press Enter or Return key. 4. Please make sure that the Ethernet adapter has an IP Address that is the same range as the router (e.g. 192.168.1.2 for the computer and 192.168.1.1 for the router). 5. Please note down the IP address and Physical address. B. Reserving an IP Address: 1. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. 2. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key. 3. A window will prompt for a user name and password. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "password". Note: If it does not take password as the password, you might have changed it when you have run the NETGEAR Setup CD so please try other passwords. If you cannot remember the password, you need to reset the router and run the Setup CD to reconfigure it. 4. When the setup page opens, click on LAN IP Setup under Advanced tab. 5. Click on Add under Address Reservation. 6. Under Address Reservation window, please select the radio button of the computer you wish to add from the Address Reservation Table. 7. If the computer you want is not on the list, please click on the Refresh button to update the table. 8. If the computer is still not on the Address Reservation Table, please type in the IP Address, MAC Address (Physical Address), and Device Name of the computer you wish to add. 9. Click the Add button when done. C. Enabling DMZ: 1. On the left side of the setup page, click on the WAN Setup under Advanced tab. 2. Check the Default DMZ Server and specify the IP address of your computer. 3. Click on the Apply button.

Just bought a laptop and can't get comcast to work with net gear. My son's lap top worked when he lived with me.

It will be one of two things or both - either your computer is not setup for DHCP or your router is using the same IP address as your ISP or both.

To check ISP IP address connect your computer to your modem then: from start => run => CMD (hit enter after this)
a command window opens, type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes.
The line with "IP address" gives you your ISP IP addr.
Compare this with what you get from your router manual if they are the same then do the following:

To configure your computer to use a DHCP IP address, go to the Control panel => network connections => Properties (right click on your default connection) => double click Internet protocol (From general tab) => (a new window pops up) from the general tab ensure that "obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.

To change the IP address of your router check your manual and do the following:
IP Addr => 10.10.1.1
Sub net mask => 255.255.0.0
Default gateway => IP address from your ISP
Make sure to the router is set to act as a DHCP server.

You should be up and running.

hi there ...

your isp is at&t? please verify the ip address straight to the modem if its is 192.168.1.1 and if your modem from your isp is set to DHCP or BRIDGE mode.

IF IP address is 192.168.1.1 (DHCP)
... change the LAN IP address of the router to 192.168.2.1 or 5.1 to prevent any IP conflict
by doing this :

1. access setup page of router usually 192.168.1.1
2. under setup tab look for the ip address, change it, then save
3. click on the status tab , and look for a VALID ip address

IF MODEM is set to BRIDGE mode
.... please ask username and password from your ISP coz we would need to set your router to PPOE...
1. access setup page
2. under setup tab look for INTERNET CONNECTION TYPE
3. select PPPoE
fill in username and password
select "keep"alive
save
4. click on status tab
look for LOG in TYPe ===> click CONNECT
if connected : check a valid IP address
if authentication failed verify again your username and password from your ISP

Goodluck!
