I have an old , perhaps 15 years old, hotpoint refrigerator with a top freezer. Defrost water runs down the inside back of the refrig compartment. It appears that the unit is designed for the water to run down this way. Is that possible or is there a drain tube that I have not yet found?

Water collects at bottom/Ice forms in top

Hi,

The defrost drain is located just under the cooling coils in the back of the freezer. You will need to unload the food and remove the shelves from the freezer. Take the back panel off from inside the freezer and you will see a hole just below the coils. Flush it with hot water using a turkey baster or small hose. See the link below for more details.

Water dripping inside back of top compartment

It looks as if your drain tube has stopped up and the water is finding the next easiest route. The drain tube runs from the freezer area, down the back of the fridge to the lower area near or on top of the compressor where it evaporates. Some food may have gotten stuck in the tube. If you can get to the back of the fridge and see the tube (it may be in the wall) you may be able to dislodge it. There also may be a place in the refrigerator where it drips from the freezer to a funnel in there. It depends. But that is normally what happens when the refrigerator goes into defrost. It fires up cow-rod coils in the freezer area and keeps the frost off the coils thats why they call it frost free. the water then runs down the tube. Start checking there first.

Freezer cold /refrigator warm . we have a side by side unit a couple of years old the freezer seems to work fine but the refrigator is warm .It don,t seem to make any funny noises and the back is clean

When the compressor is running, if the fan by the compressor and the fan inside the freezer are both running, and there is no frost on the back wall of the freezer (if there was frost would indicate a defrost issue) then check the air dampener. It is located at the very top left back side of the fresh food section. If it is not opening up, no air will flow from the freezer compartment (where all the cooling takes place) into the refrigerator section.

Fan running but neither refrig or freezer is getting cold.

Your refrigerator may be stuck in defrost cycle. I know it has a defrost timer part number 215846602 Most times they are located inside the fresh food compartment behind the control panel. Sometimes below fridge and behind kick plate. The thermostat could be defective also. You can check that by unplugging the refrigerator remove cover and checking continuity between the two male connections located on the rear side of thermostat control turned as cold as you can turn it. Or you can join the two wires together and plug refrigerator back in to see if compressor comes on. When you find the defrost time turn clockwise slowly until the refrigerator starts. If these don't work let me know and we will do some more test. Sea Breeze

Water dripping from freezer when defrost kicks on.

You probably have a plugged drain in the freezer compartment. Open that up and check it. Hope this helps!
