I've experienced a very similar problem. I took our camera to a Bridal shower with 2 sets of freshly charged (I validated the charge) NIMH rechargeables plus a set of new alkalines. Regardless of which batteries I used, the camera indicated low battery after one or two pictures were taken, if it would take one at all. Its NOT a battery problem in my case.

I'm having the exact same problem. I was in the middle of zooming on a shot and it froze, so I turned the camera off and on, and now I get the 5-chimes+Zoom Error screen. This is nuts, I've only had the thing for six months, and it was $250 (got the Stylus 730). I *think* I got a replacement plan so that's good. But still... I hope circuit city lets me get a different brand b/c I'm not happy with this now. The only problem I had before was the HORRID shutter delay. I want a model that doesn't have that problem .

Your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your batteries may need to be replaced, or the camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.
