Question about Plumbing

2 Answers

2009-10-05 I have a motor in my garage that serves my water softener, sprinkle system, and outdoor faucets in conjunction with a well pump. I live in Virgina Beach, VA. The motor is an A.O. Smith machine rated at 1HP, single-phase, 60 hz, 3450 rpm, The motor works fine except that it comes on and runs briefly every few minutes when both the water softener and sprinkler are not in use, and all outdoor faucets are shut off. I wonder what causes it to come on randomly. The motor is about 11 years old. Thank you very much for your attention. Julian Virginia Beach, VA 23456

I have a submersible Gould pump in a well. Recently air is getting into my system and coming out as irregular spurts. I replaced the water storage tank and the check valve, and the problem persists

Sounds like pump is not set deep enough and getting air. If the pump is as deep as it can go you may have to have to screen in the well changed or cleaned with acid pellets.

You can try several regenerations to see if it helps. But if the well guys did not "by-pass" the softener when working on the well and all that C!!##p got into the softener it is probably toast and either needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

Softener does not start up will not operate

HI Robert, If it is not starting on its own the cause is usually one of two things.
1. The timer motor is bad (not keeping TOD) Many models the timer motor serves as the drive motor also.
2. If it is a metered system it may not be counting the gallons and not prompting regeneration.

Otherwise check for salt bridges, a faulty electrical connection or plugged eductor assembly.

The first two are when you definitely know it is not regenerating on its own.
You can try a manual regeneration and see if it goes through regeneration on its own, if so it is most likely the meter assembly not reading gallons.
Most systems with meter assemblies will have an "icon" that flashes when gallons are being registered.
Let me know the model of valve and I can help you solve your problem easier.

Laing model 330 Pump not working-delay in hot water delivery. In the past,a vibration occurred when cold water running above the pump. Can this be repaired.Power operating to pump. Thanks, mel ross

Question not 100% clear.

1) The pump is not working? Does the pump make a noise? if pump is not working full-time, it can cause delay in arrival.
If pump motor is suspect, and outlet has power, then check override switch located on timer. Set override to Timer, move some of the trippers outward, then manually rotate timer dial until pump turns ON.
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/IMG_9325-grundfos-timer-800.jpg
If no noise is detected, or noise stops and starts, or seems strained, or if pump is hot, then pump motor may have burned out.

2) If pump is working, and makes noise like a humming sound, and pump motor is not hot, but hot water is not circulating, then unplug pump so it will not overheat and burn up.
Disassemble the pump and cross-over piece. Clean piping with white vinegar or CLR. Do not soak in CLR or it will damage seals. Rinse parts thoroughly. Reassemble and see if problem is resolved.
If pump is vibrating, then suspects include sediment and/or air inside line, and this can be resolved by cleaning as described. Also install air vent to increase life of pump.

3) Other causes for hot water delay at faucet are crossover.
Crossover can be caused by bad single-handled faucet cartridge, and/or by clogged-or-failed check valve on cross-over piece on grundfos.
This type of problem lets cold water enter hot line, and causes delay in arrival of hot water. Clean-or-replace the grundfos cross-over piece, and replace bad faucet cartridge.

Water takes 30 sec to cover 10m from heater to tap

body { background: #FFFFFF; margin: 0px; padding: 4px; font-family: arial, verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; } p { margin:0px; padding:0px; } .spwrap { background: transparent url(/wysiwyg_rte/misspell.gif) repeat-x scroll center bottom; } You are talking about length of time to get hot water from water heater. What diameter pipe are you talking about? What type of faucet do you have?
1/2" pipe has inside diameter of .54" and holds 1.2 gallons per 100 feet
10 meters is 32 feet and holds .4 gallons
Average faucet puts out 2 gallons per minute, so 30 seconds you should get 1 gallon of water.
Put a bucket under faucet and check amount of water flow.

Assuming you draw just hot water from the faucet, then 30 seconds is slow for receiving hot water.
If you have single-handle faucet and raise handle straight up in middle, then you are drawing half hot and half cold, so it would take 30 seconds for hot to arrive.

If hot water is slow, the problem might be crossover.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Crossover.html
or low water pressure due to clog in water line
http://waterheatertimer.org/Low-hot-water-pressure.html
Other problems could include clogged water filter, clogged water softener, defective pressure valve, and low water pressure.

No water is coming out of faucets and all i did was accidentally turn it a little bit what should i do?

Ok I see your re-post.
If I understand correctly, no water is coming out of any faucet.

No cold water and no hot water.

1) First of all, cold water side of water system is totally unaffected by recirculation pump or timer on recirculation pump. Faucets are connected directly to cold water line that enters house from outside, and that line does not come in contact with recirculation pump.
2) If you have no cold water, check with neighbors to see if they have water.
3) Next, go outside and check ALL outdoor spigots and see if water comes out.
4) Is it possible that you have a frozen water pipe?

Do some checking and then repost another question.
I will be here until you get it fixed.

I have a Lang Autocirc with timer for 11 years. The past few months water not getting hot I timed how long hot water takes in faucet before \unit by 6' and faucet just after unit and times the same over 2...

Autocirc can be uninstalled and the pipe cleaned out with CLR (calcium lime and rust), otherwise there are no repair parts.
Once the motor begins to slow, it overheats and burns out.
11 years is a good run, so you must have good water or are careful about your water softener.

http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-recirculation-system.html
Using the timer and running Autocirc 1 hour a day costs between $11 and $17 per year to operate.
2 hours a day is $22-34 per year.
This includes pump operation and additional time that water heater operates.

I am on well water in my home...When running tap water.I get spurts of air with the water....will you help.?...thanks

It is normal to have air in the water.
In North Dakota where I live, it's not uncommon to have
flamable natural gas come out of a faucet that is served
by a well.

The only way I can think of to get rid of the air before it
gets to your faucet is to install a tank in your basement
on the top of the water pipe, then on top of the tank
install an automatic air bleeder that is used on hot water
heat.

A plumber could design a system for you and install it.

All my best to you.

Our water softener regenerated last night...this morning the faucet water tasted like salt...do you know why???

sure if it's a reverse osmosis the valve was plugged so when you added salt it slugged the system after being empty. Common problem for this system.
