I would have to say that vista is the problem. Many people are happy with there vista, mainly becuse they only have programs that fit it. But i definitely think that microsoft could have done better. So i would have to say that because you have XP, you should use it. And if there is a button that says sync or connect, try it. I am happy that i could help:)
reinstall the ipod operating system.connect to itunes...format and reinstall.

I just had this problem again this morning and solved it in about a minute. For my player all I do is hold the "on" button down for about one minute (maybe a minute and a half) then try to turn it on normally a few seconds later. It has always solved my problem!
umm.. this is what i did to solve this problem. i hooked it in the back usb port then put the iriver disk in then went to start control panel printers and other hardware the on the left side add hardware the i found it on the list and instaled after that you have to use windows meda player to add music and it works just fine .
hi you might need to run a recovery programme or update the firmware to do this then goto the sandisk website and down load the firmware onto your computer or download recovery programme ok Once you have done this follow these instructions
1 turn mp3 off 2 slide hold/lock to on position 3 press and hold down rec button on left hand side keep held down 4 switch on whilst still holding down rec button on left hand side 5 it should now say recovery mode once it says this then open the firmware file on your computer and follow instructions also do this if your using the recovery tool from the site.
