Go to the control panel first and check the Regional settings and languages icon. Look in there and make sure all the settings say either "English- United States or just United States.

If everything is correct there, hold down the Fn key and tap the Num Lock key, then try the keyboard again.

What is a alpha character

An upper or lower case letter is considered an alpha character. A numeric character is a number. Special characters are what you see when you press the shift button and a number. There are other special characters such as ;:'"/?.>,<[{]} that are also available on standard keyboards.

Type character map in your windows search box and select the font you require. You may need to download the windows language pack for each language you use.

Keyboard letter not working

lol. The best answer is to clean the keyboard or, if necessary, get a new one (for your computer, it'll cost about $30 for a replacement keyboard.) In the meantime, the easiest way to get any character you can't get from your keyboard is to use the Character Map application. (In XP: Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map). Find the character you want, click on it, click on "Select", click on "Copy", and then paste the character normally as you would for a copy/paste. Hope this helps! Good luck!

The letter u key gives me the number 4, the i key gives me the number 5 the o gives me number 6, The last 3 to 4 letter keys gives me numbers

right first off im assuming this isn't a full size keyboard with the number pad on the right.

so when you have a laptop keyboard some characters share with others, in your case numb lock has been pressed and is replacing the letter u with 4

hope this helps

Keyboard

Keyboards on Windows computers can repeat letters when key press sensitivity is too high. This problem can be rectified by adjusting your keyboard's repeat frequency. Once this is lowered, key presses will occur slower and you will not have the letters repeated instantly.

Click"Start," then "Control Panel." Click "Hardware and Sound," followed by "Keyboard." Move the "Repeat delay" slider further to the left below the "Character repeat" option. The further left the slider moves, the longer the delay will be before a character repeats.

Trying to get the asterisk @ for email on a computer

Probably your keyboard is set to a different character set or language. To fix this go to control panel and click keyboard properties, there should be a tab for input locals. This sets the language and character set for your keyboard. To use various characters, you can use start , then type charmap.exe in the box and it will bring up a character map where you can select various characters such as the copyright sign etc. to use. Most windows from 2000 newer also have osk.exe, this draws up an onscreen keyboard you can click with your mouse to type.

Gateway laptop keyboard typing incorrect letters

Windows has support for many input-languages, e.g., for keyboards made in France with accented characters,
and for the DVORAK keyboard layout (which is a complete
rearrangement of the letters on the keyboard for maximum
typing-speed).

Go into "Control Panel", and "Regional and Language" and click the "Language" tab, and switch to the "USA Keyboard".
