Telnet is not the greatest programme to use for chat. However, Vista does not have telnet enabled as default. To install it go to:

Start menu->Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

on left select Turn windows features on and off

After a while a box will appear = look for Telnet Client and select it and press ok

Now go to Start Menu->Programs->Accessories
select Command Prompt
enter telnet and the IP Address of the computer you wish to connect with
-----------------------------------------

However, for chat I would suggest the more traditional chat programmes.

MSN Messenger (Free from Internet)
Yahoo Messenger (Free from Internet)
ICQ Messenger (Free from Internet)
AIM Messenger (Free from Internet)

If most of your email contacts are using Hotmail then use MSN, http://download.live.com/?sku=messenger
if they use AOL then use AIM http://dashboard.aim.com/aim
If they use Yahoo then use Yahoo Messenger http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com/
Otherwise use ICQ http://www.icq.com/

Happy Chatting

The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

Where is the password located at

Hey, the Netopia routers do not have a default username and password. If a password is already set up, you might need to reset the router.

In order to log into the router you need to Telnet into it.
If you are using Windows XP, you can start Telnet from Start>Accessories>Communications>Telnet

if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, Telnet is not enabled by default. You need to enable it first. You can quickly re-enable Telnet by following these steps:

Start
Control Panel
Programs And Features
Turn Windows features on or off
Check Telnet Client
Hit OK

After that you can start Telnet via Command Prompt. (or the Start menu)

then once you get into the Telnet Console, type in:
192.168.1.1

and the router interface will open up and let you chanfge settings.

How do I telnet from one computer to another computer, where first computer is connected through wireless and second computer is connected through ethernet cable to "2 wire 2701hg-b gateaway"? Thank you...

Make sure that the computer that you want to telnet to is running the telnet service, and that the firewall on that PC (if using XP/Vista/Win7 and it is switched on, or you have a third party software firewall installed) allows connections to the telnet server.

From the other computer you should be able to just run telnet [destination IP address] and press enter (may need to install telnet client on Windows 7)

Hope that helps

Having problems telnet a port

Try opening a TELNET connection to TCP port 25 on each of these mail-servers for the 'ncs.gov.ng' domain:

ncs.gov.ng mail exchanger = mx2.ncs.gov.ng
ncs.gov.ng mail exchanger = ASpmx.l.google.com
ncs.gov.ng mail exchanger = mx1.ncs.gov.ng

Each *SHOULD* connect; if not, contact the administrators of 'ncs.gov.ng' for assistance.

I access fb using https://www.facebook.com (cause my office firewall doesn't allow any forum sites that using url http://) but ini this page chat room cannot be opened. why ?

For 2 reasons:

#1. Your company would rather have you working on your computer than chatting on FB.

#2. When on a chat interface you are actually telneting directly to another computer. In other words the two machines are hooked together. During this time a person who knows how can
X-fer or send malicious programming to your computer that will either gather information from your computer and send it back to a predetermined place or generally cause havoc in you employers network..Your ITguy doesn't want his network full of malicious programming so they add thses sites to a block filter.that won't allow you to access them.

Loopback failed - 127.0.0.1 blocked - web page test not possible

Please explain:
Does it work if you use http://localhost?
Does it work if you use http://127.0.0.1?
If the first one does not, but the second does, it is possible that the issue can fixed simply by selecting.
IE-->Tools-->Options--> Connection --> LAN Settings Check Bypass Proxy for local addresses

If you can't telnet into your computer, make sure you have the Telnet service running :
  1. Click Start, then Run, and type "services.msc" (without quotes) and click OK.
  2. Find the "Telnet" service, right-click and select Properties, select "Automatic" instead of "Disabled" in the startup type box.
  3. Click Apply.
  4. Right-click the "Telnet" service and select Start.
If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Not able to telnet to my home router (netgear WGR614V9)

You have to have telnet access enabled for all earlier revisions of wgr614. See : http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/NetgearWGR614#UnlockingtheTelnetCosole but bear in mind that v9 is not known officially to have a telnet CLI.

Cheers,

Troubleshooting

Telnet is an application layer protocol. If you can telnet to the other router, then you do not have any network issues. However, the fact that you can telnet but not ping suggests that icmp messages have been blocked in the configuration of one or both routers. This is a security feature, because attacks can be launched via icmp messages.
