Question about GE 30 in. JP328 Electric Cooktop

1 Answer

Hello: I am trying to replace a cooktop (installing a used cooktop - GE model# J P651 002 AD). My problem is making sure I understand the wiring connections. The cooktop has a black, a red, and a green wire (no white). The power is coming in via armored cable that has one black, two red (one hot, one neutral), and a bare wire (I'm assuming ground). Is the correct connection as follows: black to black, hot red to red from the cooktop, and bare wire plus green wire connected to the cooktop body (i.e., grounded)? If I do this, the neutral red is capped and not used. If this is correct, why is it correct? I initially tried connecting the black and hot red on the same circuit and blew the breakers (paired 40 amp total), so I want to make sure I understand what happened. Thanks very much.

The green goes to the bare ONLY.

Likely the black was used as a neutral and the reds were 240 volts.

You need to investigate at your panel. If you see the black going to the neutral bar, abandon it by capping with wire nut. If you see both the reds going to adjacent terminals on a double breaker, connect one red to the red and the other red to the black of the cooktop,

When I try to use my gas cooktop, it makes a loud "pop" sound and has a big electrical spark that smells like fireworks then it flips the breaker.. Any ideas??

The electrical wiring under the burners has been short
probably from liquids leaks during cooking.

That is why you had the spark. The only electrical part you
have to your coo top is the electric ignite nothing else. So you should remove
all burners' assemblies from the top so to reach the bottom part where the gas
pipes are located and the ignite part no 318 in drawing Spark module
Part Number:
AP3778816made by GE.

So first you can use a hair
dryer do try it out and be sure there is not and liquid in it and put
electrical plug again to test it. If you still have the same problem, replace
the Spark module with a new one.

GE Profile nat gas cooktop, Model No JGP636BEV3BB won't ignite

If you can hear the clicking sound but are not getting a spark then there is probably a short in the ignition system. Check for any loose wires on the ignition system. Make sure all the wires are properly seated. Make sure the spark module is properly grounded. As far as testing the spark module it should be generating a spark of course. The problem is that the average voltage for the spark module is 15,000 VDC so actual testing of that voltage can be difficult. Is the spark erratic?(should spark evenly). An erratic spark timing is a sign of a bad spark module. Is the spark slow? Check the polarity of the electrical plug. If it is clicking evenly then it is probably arcing somewhere inside the cooktop and you just need to find out where. Also be aware that if you get water into the cooktop that can cause possible grounding of the spark module or ignition system.

The igniter on the right front burner of my GE Gas cooktop does not work....I must use a lighter or match to ignite....What can I do? There is no clicking sound when I turn on the burner?

the very first thing i would do here is to check the ignitor itself
under the head cap you should see two screws, once those are out you will be able to lift the burner plate, lift the burner plate, you will see, or should see the ignitor, and the wire.
i check this for voltage by unplugging the ignitor and olding the wire close to a ground, the metal body is good. Turn on the ignitor, becareful it is live. yhou shgould see a spark comming from the wire
if not check to make sure that wire is in position and on the spark module
if you do see a spark this way, just order the replacement ignitor
and install it when it arrives

Broken selector switch

TURN OFF CIRCUIT BREAKER. Lift out cooktop, remove all machine screws holding the glass frame. Remove plastic knobs and lift glass top straight up. Make sure rubber gromits are not ripped or torn. Unscrew the small screws on the selector switch and then lift up and tilt over the small aluminum chasis holding the switches to expose the wiring connections. Pull off the wires and pull out the defective switch. Replacre switch, connect wires, re-seat switch chasis, and secure switch with screws. Carefully drop in the glasstop lining up the switch shafts and the rubber grommets. Secure the top with machine screws and drop back in the cutout.

Cooktop glass broken - need a replacement - where can I find it?

It all depends on our capabilities... The top isn't all that difficult to replace. If it were me, I would call GE Factory Service 1-800-432-2737 or schedule an appointment online at www.geappliances.com as there may still be a warranty on the top which is expensive...
