Although this is a fairly current and fairly expensive digital camera, I must say that the repair of this damage will not be cost justified. Routine inspection for the repair will be between 50 and 75 after shipping. This may be applied to the total estimate, but my experience is that the overall repair will be above 200 dollars. Looking at the replacement with a new identical A590 for $284 with free shipping on Amazon tells me you should not proceed with the repair, it will not be "like new". Repairs typically leave minor tool marks and often make the camera feel a bit "loose" even when done by expert repairmen. If you are not especially attached to this model of camera you may be able to find similar features on a model that is being sold on final clearance, etc. Put searches together on buy.com and amazon.com, you may be surprized what you can buy with the repair money. If you do decide to repair, use Canon authorized local service or ship the camera to Canon after contacting their repair department by phone or website. Remember that most repairs are priced based on SLR style cameras with interchangeable parts and costing 4 to 10 times more -- these cameras can more easily justify the costs of repairs.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

I cannot get my new 50mm/1.8 lens off of my Rebel XT. PLEASE help!

Make sure you're holding down the lens release button, which is located on the front of the camera, while turning the lens. Sometimes a little bit of force is needed, I've found new lens' can stick a little bit. If it still won't come off, contact Canon.

The whole lens housing will need to be replaced in order to fix the camera, the damage to the lens is to great, cost should be taken into account when replacement is considered.

As a first step have you tried CAREFULLY (to avoid eraser bits getting inside the camera) rubbing the gold contacts on the camera and lens with a clean pencil eraser? That's one of Canon's recommendations. Good luck.

LENS DOES NOT RETRACT NOT TAKING PICS

Try to hit the side very gently while switching ON the camera. Do this several times, It should reset the timing of lens.A little bit of more pressure can be applied while it is hitted. If does not reset, then the timing lens gear is damaged. Take it to qualified service technician to get full service. Thanks.

Lens Error

If you are sure that your battery is fully charged but still does not do any good, then do this little trick:

1. Hold the camera on your right hand with the lens facing the ground.

2. As you press the power on button, tap or hit the camera's base to your left palm. Do this several times.

Chances are, there could be a sand or granule of dust that got stuck on the sides of the lens, preventing it to retract properly.

Hope this helps.

I dropped my camera and the lens won't retract. The screen reads lens error restart camera. Even though I have removed the battery to restart the camera, it won't correct its self. The lens stays out.

When you reset the camera you should be able to hear the gears of the camera lens turning. The problem is that the lens is out of alignment so the lens can't slide back in. As the gears are turning, straighten out the lens (you might have to try forcing it in different directions if it's not obvious which way the lens is bent) and it should slide back in. You obviously want to be gentle enough to not break it, but sometimes you have to use a little bit of force based on the severity of the drop. You also might need to try a few times since the gears will only run for so long before stopping. I have fixed a few cameras this way but if the lens is bent too far out of alignment you'll have to get it profesionally fixed.

Lens error restart camera

same thing just happened to me today. the little girl that I babysit dropped it about 1 foot to the rug on the ground, not a hard drop at all. so i tried taking out the batteries and hit it on the table (read on other sites) then i gently turned the end of the lens (my lens was stuck out) counter clock wise and it clicked and then worked.
