This bike must be at least a decade old, if I am not mistaken. As it is any MTB more than 8 yrs old will suffer wearing away of metals, especially its gears,i.e.24 Right? Now chain adjustment is a very temporary or a ham job. It seems that you yourself have enough experience regd mtb's, so the only recommendation that I can think of is have you ever consider upgrading to 27 gear assembly which at least is compatible and is pretty smooth. In any case if the existing 24. Its also equally strong. The setting is such that its easy changing gears. On the whole a bit on the heavy side though.......... sodeep

I have replaced the cable on the 7speed Shimano SIS derailler and Ithink I ran the cacle through the shifter wrong. I can only get three gears to shift. This is a combo brake and shifter handlebar mount.

Hi,

All shimano derailleurs have two small screws located on the mechanism itself that allow you to adjust the position of the derailleur relative to the gears. The top one adhusts how far towards the wheel the chain can go and the bottom of the two adjusts how far towards the stop it goes.

Put the bike on a stand or just prop it up so the rear wheel can spin freely when you turn the pedals by hand

Put the shifter in the highest gear and turn the pedals, the adjust the top screw until it enters the top gear, you may need to adjust the cable tension also to do this.

Once you have it going easily into and out of the top gear adjust the bottom screw so that it easily goes into the bottom gear.

You should be done! Don't forget that for the first few rides the cable will stretch out a little so you may need to tinker with those screws a couple more times.

Hope this helps:)

When changing gear it returns to sixth gear , (twist grip gears) 6 gear 20in boys bike

If you're saying the shifter itself isn't staying in the selected position and is always relaxing ALL cable tension, you have a defective shifter. Some, like the Grip Shift MRX, seem to rely on the handlebar grip to keep all the guts inside. I know of one where a space developed when the grip slipped outboard a little bit and the shifter parts separated enough for a key piece to fall out.

No one sells the nickel part so you'll probably end up replacing the whole shifter. You may even have to buy a complete set. If you have to go that far and it IS a defective design I'd get a Shimano shifter that works with 6-speeds. Like Revo. Look on eBay.

OR, maybe the cable is just really loose.

Reel is slipping when under strain on retreval making loud grating noise when this happens

It sounds like the gears are stripped. When the reel is under strain the body of the reel may flex and cause the gears to misalign and slip. These gears slipping and skipping may be the grinding sound you hear. Graphite body reels are more susceptable to body flex than metal body reels. Gears can also wear out due to lack of proper lubrication. Some manufacturers supply replacement parts for their higher end reels and the reel can be rebuilt with new gears. You will need to check with the manufacturer to see if it could be rebuilt. If it is an inexpensive reel then it will be much more cost effective to just replace the whole reel.

Shimano Altus gears

The old lubricant has gummed up. It needs a good cleaning and relubrication.
"STI shifters gum up after years of use. I've had good luck with this method and since it's nearly free it's probably worth a shot--

"Get a can of WD-40 or a similar light solvent/oil solution. Pull the brake lever back to the bar to partially expose the shifting mechanism and generously hose down the interior with your solvent. I mean really get it in there from all directions, using the little red spray tube if possible. Let it sit for a while and then drizzle in some light oil like Tri-Flo or similar. Then wipe down the exterior of the shifter with some Simple Green or other degreaser (to keep the overspray off your hands).

"I've rescued two sets of STI-type shifters with this method. Hope you get your problem solved one way or another, because new Dura-Ace sure ain't cheap."
