open system properties / hardware / Device manager

Max hard drive size for Toshiba Satellite 2430-S255

Unless you are running Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98 and your drive format is FAT16/32 and not NTFS, there should not be any problem with a high capacity drive. Don't make the HDD size too big: it may be costly. If you have money to burn get two drives, one internal system disk, and the other an external storage/ backup drive.

I recently bought a Toshiba Satalite laptop to replace the one I dropped which was also a Toshiba Satalite. I had taken out the old hard drive and installed it in the new one but now it wont do anything...

Yes it does matter. XP was configured for the old Toshiba and this will only work if both Toshiba laptops are exactly the same model.
To get your new Toshiba operating, put the new hard drive with the Vista operating system back in the Toshiba laptop.
To transfer your data from the old hard drive, purchase a USB adapter hard drive case and place the old hard drive inside this case. This will then be an external USB hard drive.
Plug this USB hard drive into the new Toshiba's USB port and it will detect it as an external storage/hard drive. You can then open the various folders and files and copy the data files to your new Toshiba.
To free up disk space on this USB hard drive, delete the Windows folder, Program Files folder and other folders that are no longer needed.
Use this hard drive as a backup hard drive etc.

I cannot plug any divice.

Hi,

The laptop is too old for Windows 7 to be installed onto it. Windows 98 will need the USB 2 drivers installed before you can plug a USB 2 drive in and have it recognized.

My advice to you would be to upgrade Windows 98 to Windows XP, then you will have an up to date computer.

Regards.

How to reformat a notebook laptop with no CD-driver?

Remove the hard-disk - it will usually connect via an IDE or SATA-compatible interface. You can then connect it to a computer (internally, or via eSata / USB / 1394 enclosure). You can then format it from that computer.

When you say no CD-driver, do you mean Driver or Drive?

if there's no CD drive, it should either have a floppy drive (in which case, any system book disk can re-format the HDD), or USB-booting capabilities.

If there's no driver, than a Windows 2000 / XP CD should be able reformat the disk - when you boot from it, it will load drivers off the CD. You don't need to install Windows normally, the recovery console can format disks.
A Windows 95/98/ME boot disk/CD will allow formatting, but only in FAT/FAT32 file systems (you will probably want NTFS, which 2000 and XP can create)

Fairly old toshiba laptop with hal.dll error wont even boot now..

Well it must be an error when you install the windows XP...If you choose just to upgrade the your system then it might have an error on dll. Please reprogram your system i mean reformat your system. And not just upgrading well if ever you have an important data in the system then you must have a externat storage device then take it on your laptop.

Toshiba P30 notebook

You may need to take the hard drive out and find a portable USB hard drive case to put it in ...if it is 3 years old it is probably an IDE drive ...newer ones are SATA drives....then hook it to another computer and and check it ...you can also reformat it in the portable case on another computer then put it back in the laptop and then reinstall windows......if it isn't recognized by the other computer then it probly wrecked the hard drive somehow..
Hope this helps

Re-installing Windows '95

Check your bios settings for the usb ports they may be disabled in the bios. Enable them.

Your CD Drive should have been enabled if it allowed you to run windows 95.

Check your make and model numbers for the hard ware that you need to run and post back a comment and I will see what drivers I can find for you.
