Question about Hilltop Rv 60 AMP CIRCUIT BREAKER CARDED

1 Answer

No electrical power

I am not getting power to my system on my 82 Tioga motor home. Have tried plug in and generator. No juice. Both generator and plug in were functional. Main circuit breaker has been popping a lot lately, but throwing the breaker doesn't help. Checked GFI, didn't seem to be tripped.

Any ideas?

You must find the reason the main breaker is popping ...

I'd start by unplugging everything and remove all breakers. Turn the main on ... does it pop? If it pops here look between the breaker panel and the end of your cord. Turn the power off - reinstall the first breaker - turn power back on. What happens ... keep doing this until the main or individual breaker pops - investigate that circuit to find your short.

If you get all breakers back in with out popping anything ... start plugging stuff back in. Something is shorting somewhere.

Let me know what you find please.

    Possibly ...

Is yours a 30 amp service or 50 amp?

In my experience a 30 amp service can run the coach and the AC and TV ... or ... the coach and the AC and the MICRO ... or ... the coach and the TV and the MICRO. And ... this observation is based on good power from the campground. If you find power much below 110, you shouldn't run but one of the three big consumers at a time. You could cause serious damage to your applicances and unit.

If I try to run the TV and the MICRO and the AC - forgetaboutit. This from my personal unit and several years as a facility manager at a camping resort. It just will not fly.

To answer your question ... your main could be damaged. For the small amount a replacement costs, it is a good investment for your convenience and piece of mind.

An after thought. If you have 30 amps, and you want to do something about it AND you are handy AND money is not an issue, you could replace your breaker box and 30 amp cord with a box that has two buss bars (220 V AC) and a 50 amp cord. Expect to pay $50.00 for the box + breakers and about $200.00 for the cord.

I hope you find this information useful.

Trying to driveRHEEM RAMB-036JAZ using a Honda eu2000 generator. How to hook this up?

You have to very careful powering up home appliances on portable generators due to back feed problems to incoming lines. I would recommend getting an experienced electrician to show and explain the problems with what you are considering. Many linemen have been shocked due to backfeed. The real way to perform this is to get the controller that is put on home generating systems such as generac type systems. These automatically isolate line supply from backup power from home generators, thereby eliminating shock hazards to linemen.
If prolonged shortage, you could disconnect the wires into the furnace and install an extension cord from the furnace to the 120 volt plug on the generator. Most fans are powered on gas furnace on 120 volt. Make sure your voltage needed on your furnace before attempting emergency power up. I have seen some furnaces power by 240 volt fan motors. If it is 240 volt then use the 240 plug wired correctly. PS when you get an electrician to help you with the wiring, check out the requirement to provide grounding, to lessen your shock hazard.
Hope this helps.

How do i get my outlets to work in my RV?

Depending on the age, make and model. Some older models have separate electrical systems for the generators, some change over automatically between a land line plug and the generator. Do the outlets work when plugged into a land line? Does the generator have and converter form 12 volt to 120 ?

Starts juice....sat for 10 years in the box...started using it 3 weeks ago...worked fine until circuit breakers blown...what's up?

Colemans were known for losing what is known as "residual magnetism", especially when sitting for long periods of time without use. This residual magnetism is necessary for exciting the field to produce electricity. Here is what you can try: Plug a 110v drill into one of the 110 outlets. While the engine/generator is running, with an open hand (not fingers wrapped around it) spin the chuck while holding the drill trigger in the run position. Many times this small amount of current that will be produced by spinning the drill motor will restore the residual magnetism and excite the field. Keep in mind that if this works, the drill motor will begin to spin immediately since it is plugged into the outlet. Hope this helps.

I have a onan genset generator model #3.0AJ 1R/16017S serial # L830689411. It is wired wrond to my motor home it runs good but no electricity coming from generator to motor home, which is a 1982 coachmen....

The wiring diagram for the generator is pretty simple. You have three wires coming out, White/Green/Black. The black is the Hot, White is neutral, and green is ground. If the generator is running and you do not have power at the black wire, the problem is in the generator. Check the circuit breaker on the generator for OK. Make sure that power is passing through it.

Where is the power breaker on a 1981 motor home

Toward the back, by the bed you will see a grill/box. It will have a small, square, black buttton at the top, in the middle. You will need to turn this little button 90 degrees to open the door to the electrical panel. The door will drop down, and you will see all of your fuses for living portion of the unit. If you don't see a blown fuse there, you may want to look behind the drivers seat. That is where you will find the vehicle fuse box. Good Luck.. D

My generator run roughly and will not put out any electricity

Try getting a rebuild kit for the carb. Also change the spark plug. I know you cleaned the carb, but sometimes you will need to change the gaskets and filters in the carb.

Motor runs wide open but no power from generator

You will need to install new diodes, they are located in the plastic housing behind the receptacles...It looks like little spark plugs..They work to put dc voltage to the rotor, without the exciter voltage applied, you will not get ac power out..The part number is 3483.01....You can buy these online for about $6 each, they have 2 inside the generator, and you should change both.
