I have a phone that has no display showing. Using Feature *7 and a number doesn't increase the contrast. But after I try and change the contrast it shows Fgwcb$fw completely clearly.

That looks like that sets freaking out. I'd unplug that one for 10 seconds and see if that corrects the problem. Also, did you try another set in its place to see if the display on the sets having the issue and not the port?
