Question about Dryers

How do you test the voltage for a dryer? Bought a testing meter to test the continuity of (250 or 120...) just don't know how to go about it.

You cannot test continuity with this unless you have a death wish. You could see if you had power going to an object but that would not let ye know if power was going through it. Both sides of the heating element could be hot and therefore light up the tester but that would not PROVE the heater was ok. To do that you would need to remove a wire (while live) connect up to the live 240 volt wire and the leg to the heater THEN if the light comes on yeah you have continuity but you could be KILLed in the process. It would be better to get a meter and check each item for continuity:

    Set the meter to OHMS and touch the leads together. Notice the needle move? That is showing a complete circuit.Rmove a wire from each item so ye won't get a false reading.

ELECTRIC Dryer no heat or little heat:

Check your venting and lint basket. Check blower for lint build up and blower wheel obstruction., test by trying to turn the wheel manually by hand (should be easy) May have to remove cabinet or front/back plate to get to it)

Next check the heating element itself with a meter for continuity OHMS CLOSED CIRCUIT. If not its defective.

Check dryer Terminal block prongs both outside prongs should give combined 220, and 110 each if u check 1 outside & 1 center (ground) prong. Also check house electrical outlet for full voltage. 220 because if u only get half or 110 volts you will be able to run the machine which uses only 110 to run motor but not the heater which uses a full 220,

Check the thermal cut off, the cycling and the hi limit thermostats.
For continuity or OHMS. If no ohms or resistance they need replacement.

Lastly check your moister sensor. ( located inside the dryer door usually) Especially if machine seems to shut down early and clothes are still wet.
Test with a meter at room temperature and it should show continuity.

Electric dryer no start does nothing

Check dryer Terminal block prongs both outside prongs should give combined 220, and 110 each if u check 1 outside & 1 center (ground) prong. Also check house electrical outlet for full voltage.

CHECK THERMAL SHUT OFF THERMOSTAT USUALLY LOCATED ON THE BLOWER. for OHMS or resistance with a meter. Should show a closed circuit. Ohms WHEN THIS FUSE BLOWS IT WILL SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING.

NEXT Test the PUSH start switch with meter for OHMS. Should show OHMS when pushed in or on start, and no ohms or infinity when in off position.

If you hear a humming/clicking sound from motor area you more than likely have a bad motor.
Try this test out to see if u have weak windings or relay/capacitor on motor.
Open the dryer door and turn by hand the drum while machine is on ON position. And you or someone else presses the door engagement switch in. If it starts up then u have bad windings

Another thing to check is the belt safety switch. With a multi meter.
Especially if u just replaced the belt. The belt safety switch is attached to the Tensioner and motor. IT LOOKS LIKE A DOOR SWITCH SOMEWHAT a little black pc of plastic with 2 prongs going into it. Sits at bottom of motor. Under the Tensioner. Attach meter clips to the 2 prongs on switch, Then when the little white push button is pressed in it should show continuity and none when released.

Lastly check ur DOOR SWITCH for continuity with a meter when the button is pushed in the (on/Door closed position,) it may have gone bad.

I don't know what tools and skills you have, but driers are generally fairly basic. You will need a multi meter for checking voltages. First ensure the power sw operates properly by checking power both sides of the switch with power off/unplugged, with the meter on Ohms, that's the omega symbol. It tests continuity. You are looking for contiuity through the machine. I found a power sw recently felt ok but internally no good. Does the drier have an electronic controller or rotary timer/heat set??

How do i test my dryer fan motor


Connect it to a power source after unplugging the connector? Is the fan freely rotating and have you checked the windings for continuity with a test meter? If it passes those tests its probably ok unless it has shorted turns on the windings, which is why the final test should be to connect it independently and see if it runs. A better way of doing things would be to monitor the voltage across the motor connectors with a test meter when it is supposed to be running. If it has volts but does not run then it is faulty. BE CAREFUL AS IT IS HIGH VOLTAGE SO MAKE SURE YOU DON'T TOUCH ANY LIVE PARTS AND ANY CONNECTIONS ARE INSULATED

Have a Series 80 electric dryer. No heat, but the blower works. Bought in 1999. Don't know where to start. Would like to do this myself. Any ideas? Thanks


Un plug the machine, check the thermal fuse, located in the rear of the machine behind the back panel. Usual it looks like white plastic with 2 wires on it. you should use a continuity meter and test the thermal fuse with the wires disconected.

If no continuity : the thermal fuse is bad and could have been caused by a blocked vent or bad operating thermostat or it just went out. you will need to replace it.

If you have continuity : you can check the heating element located on the right. remove the wires and test for continuity. If you don't have continuity the heating element is bad and you will need to replace.

There are many other thing that can cause the no heat issue but these are common problems.

5. Selector Switches-Read the wiring picture and determine which switch is closed. You should read continuity across closed switches.
6. Safety Switch on Motor-There is a safety switch on motor to insure that heaters can not come on unless motor is running. It is normally open when the motor is idle/not running, and closes when motor runs. In order to check with an ohm meter, remove the two large wires on motor switch and make them electrically safe. Tape them. Plug the dryer in and start motor. Check continuity across the terminals on the motor switch you removed the heavy wires from. If it is ok you should read continuity. Remember that the smaller wires in a dryer carry the 120V and the large wires carry 240V. There is no voltage on these two terminals with wires removed. It is ok to test with ohm meter.

Dryer works but no heat, have a multimeter but need to know how to use and what to test


no heat at all? open front to access heater box, set meter to ohms. (unplug dryer), test for continuity across element connections. (disco at least one wire at each part to ensure accurate results for each check. then reconnect when done) some ohms is good here. if OL on meter then its open/bad. check each thermostat on side. they should all be 0 ohms. post results.
At terminal block in rear check voltage while plugged in. set meter to volts AC. each outside terminal to center should show 120 V approx. then together 240v. if 120 only on one side or one side significantly less than 120 then check outlet. Missing one phase/leg of supply can cause motor to run but no heat.

Q - My electric dryer runs but will not heat, what could stop my dryer from heating?
A - Things that could stop a electric dryer from heating:
- house fuse or breaker ( needs two of them ), heating element, burnt wire, thermostat(s), thermal fuse ( not all models ), motor heat switch, timer, selector switch, burnt power cord/plug.

Heating element continuity?


Unplug the dryer from the wall. There are 2 wires connecting power at the heating element. Take one of these wires off, doesn't matter which one, but take at least one of the 2 off. Then put your meter probes across the terminal of the heating element where you took the 1 wire off and the other terminal of the heating element that still has a wire on it. Your meter will pretty much read full continuity if good, no reading at all if bad. Also check from one of these terminals of the element with one meter probe going to the metal frame of the unit. You should get no reading. If you do the element is shorted and would have likely tripped your house breaker.

Better to test a heating element for voltage with your meter like I described to you in your other question. I've seen heating elements read good when just doing a continuity test, however once voltage is applied and they start to heat they can expand and open up, thus not work, even though testing good when doing just a continuity test. Not always, but sometimes, it does happen enough to note to you.
