If you left it sitting in the box "for a few years"...then that's why.
The battery has to be used to stimulate the "memory" of the battery. If it was charged once and never used again, then of course it is going to have a battery issue.

My ipod nano does not hold charge.

What you can try and do is to charge it ac not dc. Ac would be in the car with a car charger. But if that is how you always charge it that is why it dont keep charge cause an long about of time charging your ipod in the car is bad on ac. The reason im telling you to charge it ac is because the battery is not use to it. Or vice versa.

I plugged in my i pod and came back a hour later and the screen was black and was frozen and none of the buttons would work

you will need to reset your ipod this will not delete songs. 1 Toggle the Hold switch on and off (slide it to HOLD and then back again).
2 Press and hold Menu and the Center button for at least 6 seconds, until the
Apple logo appears.
If iPod nano won’t turn on or respond
â Make sure the Hold switch isn’t set to HOLD.
â The iPod nano battery might need to be recharged. Connect iPod nano to your
computer or to an Apple USB Power Adapter and let the battery recharge. Look for
the lightning bolt icon on the iPod nano screen to verify that iPod nano is receiving
a charge.
To charge the battery, connect iPod nano to a USB 2.0 port on your computer.
