Why does my camera keep saying battery exhausted even when I change the batteries?

If batteries leaked in the camera the connections IN the camera may be dirty. Putting in a new battery takes care of the battery connection but not the camera connections. This is why it is very important to take out batteries when you are done taking photos. When you want to shoot again you put the batteries back in and set the time and date. You MAY be able to clean the connections with a pencil eraser. If you use a pencil eraser please blow out the dust from the eraser. If you are positive the camera then I cannot help you here.

The batteries died while I was taking photos. The lens did not retract. I changed the batteries and it would not come on. Changed the batteries again and got a message 'Change batteries'. I hooked it up to...

I don't know if you have a voltage meter, but you do, check the voltage of the batteries, you just tried. I have seen many "new" batteries that aren't good, and had similar problems as a result.

Even so I'd suggest a brand new set of Duracell or Energizer batteries, BUT.....

Why aren't you using NiMh rechargables?????

They have much more power will give you over a year of picture taking even if you shoot hundreds of pictures a day. All you need to do is make sure you charge them about once a week, even if you don't use the camera.

It basically means the battery has outlived it's use and can no longer hold a charge. Even though the charger is hooked up you will still need a new battery to get away from this problem. Once the new battery is installed and charged this error should disappear. Hope this helps.

Change the batteries message even with new NIMH RShack batteries

The solution is to change the small 'date/time' battery. You can have the regular batteries as charged as you like, it won't make any difference. The tiny date/time battery is in the same compartment as the regular batteries, on the opposite side of the hinge. Extract it with a fingernail, it is situated on the left hand wall of the battery compartment (when the camera is inverted and the compartment open).

Canon A95 "Change Batteries" problem!

I have this problem as well. I thought it was a problem with my NiMH batteries. So, I bought a volt meter to make sure the batteries worked. I have 8 AA NiMH batteries. I charged them all up and tested them with the volt meter. They were all good to go. However, no matter what I put in the camera one of two things happens:
1. I get the "change batteries" message.
2. I don't get the message, but the next time I check the camera (a few days later), one of them is totally drained.
Something is very wrong and I plan on contacting Canon.
