Question about Computers & Internet

Belkin Hey just purchased my very first laptop and a Belkin N1 wireless modem-router. It says to plug it into my wired computer and ADSL line. the problem is, my tower doesn't have a jack where the line can plug in. Can i get some sort of adaptor?

How old is your tower? Most computers for the last few years have had a TCP/IP port. If it really does not have one then yes, you can purchase an ethernet card or usb device. Just head to BestBuy, Officemax, or Target and tell them you need an ethernet adapter. I have always used the PCI cards. Some people prefer the external USB devices because they are easier to install.

I just thought of something. Do you have a DSL or cable modem already? Isn't your desktop plugged into that with an ethernet cable? If it is, then your computer has everything it needs. You just need to plug the modem into the WAN port on the router and the desktop into a LAN port on the router.

    Let me know.

Adsl wire will not fit grey adsl port on the new modem-router, as the wire that we currently use is a screw in and the port is a plug in

Are you sure that your old device isn't a dial-up modem rather than an ADSL modem? The wires should be a small square one from phone line to device and either an Ethernet (larger squareish end) or a USB from the device to the PC. Both cables should have been in the pack that you bought.

If you don't get a dial tone, use a different or new phone cable.

Can't even connect to "setup assistant"

it sounds like you need to keep using your usb modem to connect to the internet. then setup internet sharing on the computer and connect the wireless router to the network plug on the computer.....

then basically you are sharing the internet to the plug on the back of the pc into the router and then wirelessly out to the network and PS3
