Question about Modems

Belkin Hey just purchased my very first laptop and a Belkin N1 wireless modem-router. It says to plug it into my wired computer and ADSL line. the problem is, my tower doesn't have a jack where the line can plug in. Can i get some sort of adaptor?

Re: Belkin

How old is your tower? Most computers for the last few years have had a TCP/IP port. If it really does not have one then yes, you can purchase an ethernet card or usb device. Just head to BestBuy, Officemax, or Target and tell them you need an ethernet adapter. I have always used the PCI cards. Some people prefer the external USB devices because they are easier to install.

What happen when a adsl line work with a phone but not with a router

The phone line does two jobs. Voice phone which is what it was originally used for and ADSL modem which works at a high audio frequency.
Somewhere between the phone socket and the modem should be a filter splitter. One part goes to the phone and the other to the router. Make sure you have that.
The modem will have a power light and several additional lights. Assuming the power light is on we are interested in two of them; The ADSL light and the Internet light. When you switch the modem on you should first see the power light flash then go solid. Then the ADSL light will flash and then this should go solid. If this light does not come on then you have not plugged the phone wire in properly. If this light just keeps flashing slowly then the modem can't see an ADSL signal on the phone line. If you have a spare router you could try it and see if the ADSL light goes solid on that.
If the ADSL light is fine then the modem has locked onto the signal on the phone line, sync'ed. If not then this is the problem you must solve. Ask your ISP if service is set on your line.
The next light is the Internet light, this maybe a symbol like an i or a world. This light will begin flashing then go solid. It will flash with Internet traffic. This means you have Internet, as far as the modem is concerned. If this light does not stay on then your ADSL account name and password maybe wrong. You can correct this but that's a different question you need to ask.

Use a 2-wire or 4-wire cable to connect from the telephone-jack to the telephone-port on your DSL modem/router combination device.

Use an 8-wire Ethernet cable to connect from one of the 'LAN' ports on the router to the network-port on your laptop.

Then, you will have Internet access, and, if this router also has a "wireless" capability, you can configure it to provide wireless access to your computer(s).

What do i connect to

There will be at least 2 plugs on the modem. One will be a smaller plug, that you will plug a phone line into (if you look closely, there will be only 2 wires in that plug). The remaining plugs will be for either your wireless router (if you use one), or your computers.

Need to get wireless on my laptop,

No, the SB5100 is just a cable modem, not a wireless router. You will need to keep your sb5100 but you will need to purchase a wireless router if you want wireless on your laptop. If you can also plug your laptop into the sb5100 via an ethernet cable for your internet connection. Linksys and Belkin and others make wireless routers that you can use for your wireless connections.

Need to hook up Belkin G wireless router to Motorola SB5120

Plug your cable line into your modem, make sure it's tight, but don't use a tool. Next plug the ethernet line from the modem to your PC ethernet port. Then plug in your power to the modem. Allow your modem to sync. Don't use the USB line at all. Do not even hook it up unless your computer doesn't have a working ethernet line. Don't run the disk either, it will only install the modem driver that is only used if you use USB.

If you have issues connecting after that, you may have to go into your ethernet adapter settings and make sure that it is using DHCP. DSL usually uses a different setting (PPP I think) and you will not be able to connect.

By the way, excellent choice in modems.

D link modem

try to upgrade the latest firmware for the router and that would fix this problem, check if this problem is with both wired and wireless computers, if not with the wired..only wireless has problems, check if you have any other wireless device operating in the same frequency of the router..if s, turn off other devices and check b.cos that me interfere your w/ls connection, if wired is having the same problem, connect modem straight to the pc and observe the connection, so that you can isolate problem.. Your router is not synchronized with the line. You should power cycle your router (i.e)disconnect power cable from the router waith for 30 seconds and then reconnect, check if the dsl cable is connected properly to the router, if yes remove it once and the reconnect it, this should fix the problem. upgrade the latest firmware version for your router .Are there any electrical devices near the router that are only switched on at that time of day and then switched off again in the morning. What i'm thinking is that you are experiencing REI or Repetitive Electronic Interference. This is caused by EMP emmisions form devices nearby. Have you had anything fitted recently that may be hardwired into you master socket, this will bypass your filter and cause interference on the line. The only other thing I can think of is that there maybe some engineering works going on at the exchange or on the line.
