Question about Maxtor Hard Drive
1.Is this scenario that you are taking the harddrive out of the HP Pavilion a6535n, and trying to put it in the HPPavilion a1000, after removing the harddrive out of the HP Pavilion a1000?
Using the Pavilion a6535 harddrive as a Master harddrive?
When Windows is installed on a computer it assigns 'codecs', to various major components of the computer.
(Think of the 'codecs' as Serial numbers of the components, but no personal info about the user is recorded)
Major hardware components such as,
3.Motherboard, or more specifically the BIOS program, and version on the BIOS chip, on the motherboard.
6.Graphics 'engine'. (GPU or Graphics Processing Unit)
Change any two of these components, and it sends up a Red Flag.
(Sometimes just one, if the motherboard has Integrated Graphics. The GPU is soldered to the motherboard. And of course the BIOS chip stated above. That is two components)
The 'Red Flag', notifiies Microsoft that the Genuine copy of Windows on that harddrive, does not belong with the computer it's in.
[Microsoft makes one Master disk, and all the other copies made from it are Genuine copies]
Microsoft Users License states "One Genuine copy of Windows per One computer"
This is Microsoft's way, to try to stop theft of their Windows operating system.
If no measures were implemented, a user could take one Genuine copy of Windows, and install it on 1000's of computers.
Windows will need to be Activated again.
2.Or are you installing the harddrive out of the Pavilion a6535 into the Pavilion a1000 as a Slave drive?
You need to set the Pavilion a1000 harddrive as a Master harddrive with it's Jumper Pins, and also set the Jumper Pins on the Pavilion a6535 harddrive, as a Slave harddrive.
Pavilion a1000 - Master harddrive
Pavilion a6535 - Slave harddrive
Look at the back of your Pavilion a6535 harddrive first. Look where the pins are where you connect the flat ribbon cable, (IDE interface cable), and the power cable, (4-pin Molex ribbon cable)
All the way to the right side of the harddrive, are the 4-pins for power. To the very Left of them are the Jumper Pins. To the Left of the Jumper Pins are the pins for the flat IDE ribbon cable. (40 pins. Actually 39, one is not there)
This is a chart from Seagate for the Maxtor IDE harddrive jumper settings, (Seagate bought out Maxtor),
This is a video that tells you how to configure IDE harddrives as a Master and Slave, with jumpers on the jumper pins,
Should you have further related questions please come back, and post them.

If you try to enter in safe mode or at last known config and the laptop reboots or freezes then you need to reinstall the operating system if you want to use that hard drive on hp pavilion a1000n. The laptops have different chipset and XP requires to be the same or similar chipset to boot properly.
