When handling the ignitor just remember not to get your hands on the burner.

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

Our dryer stopped blowing out warm or hot air. All the buttons still work and cool air still comes. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Check the heating element, burner operation, ignitor, thermal fuse, and the wiring (power cord).

  • Visually inspect your heating element for any broken or burned areas. The heating element is a coil made from a nickel-chrome alloy, called nichrome.
  • When the burner is operating properly, the flame should be clean and blue.
  • If the ignitor is cycling without the burner lighting, you probably have defective electrical coils in the gas valve. These coils look like black cylinders with wires coming out the top of them, and are located near the burner valve assembly. When they get power, they open up and allow the gas to get through to the burner. If this is a new installation, make sure the gas valve is turned on.
  • If the ignitor doesn’t glow, look for a white or yellowish discoloration, or for a break in the ignitor. If this is something visible, just replace the ignitor.
Good Luck and have a nice day.

It's run but there's no heat

The gas dryer has a spark ignitor that starts the burner to heat up. Upon switching on the dryer you should hear the ignitor clicking to light the burner. If you do not hear the clicking noise the ignitor needs to ne replaced

This is the closest model # I could find but I have a gas dryer model TGDX640EQO and it doesn't heat up but does tumble. My husband thinks it is the ignitor, how would you determine that?

First clean all the dust and lint from around the burner and its components, including the sensor which 'tells' the dryer that the ignitor is on or the burner is lit.

There are two different types of ignitors. The most common glows a bright red to light the burner. The other gives off a series of sparks.

In either case, a visual examination should tell you whether the ignitor is working. Before you start the dryer, remove the burner access panel. Have someone start the dryer while you look into the burner unit to see if you see the 'glow plug' or the 'sparker' trying to light the burner. If not, the ignitor is probably bad.

If the ignitor is not the problem, look for dirty or defective sensors that will keep the burner from coming on. If these sensors do not sense the light given off by the ignitor, for safety reasons the burner will not come on.

Hope this was helpful.

Dryer doesnt blow hot air.

I find that quite often the ignitor is out of alignment or the glass window is covered with lint.
a gas dryer blows air through a burner assembly to heat the air. The burner assembly consists essentially of a gas valve, ignitor and a flame sensor. If any part of the burner assembly malfunctions, the result will be low or no heat and slow drying of the clothes.
There are two common styles of ignitors, glow ignitors and spark ignitors. The ignitor ignites the gas either by heating up and glowing, or by sparking. If the ignitor fails, the dryer will not heat.

The easiest way to check the ignitor is to observe it. Remove the small access panel in front, select a high temperature setting and start the dryer. Watch the burner assembly, shortly after starting the dryer the ignitor should begin to glow or spark. If you see it glow or spark, then the ignitor is working.

Worked fine until today. Not heating. Drum turns well

Ken,

I am diagnosing a similar problem in my dryer. Mine is a MDG4000BWW but the part catalog looks almost exactly the same. If you haven't done so already, make sure your vent pipe is clear. Since the air flow carries away the combustion gasses, there are safety switches to shut off the gas if the vent is blocked. If the vent is clear, take off the front cover by unscrewing the four screws that hold the door and door stops. The front panel should tilt forward and come free. The gas control is pretty straightforward. There is an ignitor that heats up and glows yellow. On my machine it is on the left hand side of the burner and is very obvious. If the ignitor does not heat up, that is probably the problem. You can confirm that the ignitor is getting electricity with a voltmeter. If you don't have one try the other heat ranges on the dial. It is unlikely that all the control positions would go bad at once, so if none of them make the ignitor work I'd recommend replacing it. If the ignitor works then a solenoid (electric control valve) should open and allow gas to flow into the burner. If the ignitor goes off without the burner starting, then the primary solenoid needs to the replaced. If the burner lights but does not stay on, then there are two potential problems. There is a flame sensor that detects the fact that the burner is on and sends a signal to a second solenoid to keep the gas on. It may be hard to tell which is the problem without a meter. My bet would be the solenoid. If the gas comes on properly and stays on for more than a minute or so, but then goes off and does not come back on I think you have a thermostat problem. There are two (on my machine) one to prevent overheating and one that cycles that gas on and off to maintain temperature. The high limit thermostat is to prevent fire if the cycle thermostat fails. All the parts are available online and range from about $16.00 to $35.00. Hope this helps - good luck

Gas dryer doesn't heat up

,when you start your gas dryer you should here two clicks, if so then your ignitor should begin to glow if two clicks and no glow [its your ignitor] but you can use a volt meter and make sure 110 volts at ignitor if voltage replace ignitor with new.if not two clicks then its going to be your thermal fuse its in the same area as the burner Therese two kinds[only one in each dryer tho],both white having two wires and small, one looks like a missile the other a fling saucer.ither kind you can put the two wires going to it to gether ,isolate them with tape and try heating.if heats replace.now if fuse you need to check for any blockage, inyou house or dryer.over heating can cause the fuse to open if i can be of more help you can email thru fixya God bless ,tom

No Heat on a whirlpool dryer. 14 years old.drum turns, timer moves, getting gas to valve, tapped solenoids-no change.burner not lighting. thanks for any info

if ignitor not coming on could be flame sensor mounted on side of burner housing or ignitor ..if ignitor glowing but burner no lighting replace both solenoids bad connections interally on solenoids..also if ignitor not glowing possible small white thermal fuse open.. sensor and fuse can be jumped across to confirm ..
