Question about Hitachi 46F500 46" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

Samsung 52" HDTV red convergence bowed

I replaced both stk chips and the convergence is still bowed. I have some electrical engineering experience so I am not scared to fix. I just have no idea where to begin. In convergence mode, the red will not even move. Blue will move but is way off. I have 6 convergence areas. Three on top, three in middle and three at bottom. I am in the process of going through the resistors now to make sure they are not bad. Does anyone have a schematic of the convergence board or some insight into a systematic process to figure out the problem?
Thanks,
Russ

Using an ohm meter, how do I tell if they are bad?

  • rieske Oct 06, 2009

okay, I turn my meter on touch both sides of the resistor. If I hear a beep it is good, if I do not, it is bad? Where do you place the red and black prongs? I have done it under the board on the soldered ends and on top on both sides of the resistor... I am not sure if I even have my meter set to the right setting...

I have done it on ac voltage, ohms, and tone...

    which do I use...

I sent the board with a friend who was going to take it to an avionics tech at Delta. He was going to look at the board and check all the components. I will let you know how it goes. I replaced the STK but not they were only 6.50 each. Do you think they will work or should I get the OEM from Samsung? I guess if this does not work, I will buy the whole board.

    Thanks again!

First---look close at all the resistors around the chips--any that are white or discolored in the middle are suspect--MOST of the time a low value resistor (1.5, 1.8, 2.2 ohm) will be bad---check them all--there will be some 150 ohm or higher--they usually do not go--

There is a site I have found where you can download a service manual---I offer it only as information and not a solution-----http://www.nodevice.com/

If you find an open resistor or resistors they all have a location number on the top of the circuit board in case they are burnt and you cannot tell value from the color bands marked on them.

LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR NEED ADVICE- I am here to help people.

other than ones that are discolored--look for one or more with no reading across it---have the meter set high enough so the 150 or higher resistors read---an open resistor will not have any reading--like a open fuse--you are looking for one or more open--gone.

Most of the resistors around the chips will have RK location numbers like RK44 etc---if they are all good--double check your soldering to make sure you did not miss any when you soldered them in.

use the ohms setting and look to see what each one reads---a 1.5 can read a little higher in circuit---best way(does not matter which lead goes where) is on top of board so you can look at the resistors to see if any are discolored in the middle---white discoloration means probably bad.

All of the STK chips were designed by Sanyo--the generic ones are fine--I buy and use ones from Ebay and of about 300 I have bought in the last 2 years only got two new ones that were bad--I had a friend who had a Mitsubishi---the chips from them were 25 dollars each--we looked at the Mitsubishi chips and guess what? They had the exact same production number in the upper right corner as my generic ones--lots of these places buy generic and resell at much higher prices saying it is OEM---other than 2 out of 300 being bad that I bought--none of these customers has ever called me to say they have the same problem again---

Good luck and let me know what happens--you are better to repair the board then replace it--I have seen people replace the board and have new troubles.....be careful.

Also--IF I CAN HELP YOU IN ANY WAY--do not hesitate to ask.

Convergence off screen looks bowed

Below are two of the most common problems encountered with projection TV sets.

Problem #1 - CONVERGENCE PROBLEM

Projection TV2_bing.gif sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung2_bing.gif, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash2_bing.gif focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

93a1209.pngCONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.

This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from TvRepairKits.com

Their kits include a step by step instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Your TV most likely has a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.

Tv troubleshoot for me

chances are that IC804 has failed. You have two ICs that allow you to converge the three colors. IC804 is used for Red Horizontal and Vertical Convergence and also for Green Vertical Convergence. IC805 is used for Blue Horizontal and Vertical Convergence and also for Green Horizontal Convergence. These ICs run very hot and have a very high failure rate which sometimes will cause damage to resistors in their associated circuits. They are both STK-110 and it's best to replace them both at the same time. It's also a good idea to upgrade them to either STK-150 or STK-180. These will run a lot cooler than the STK-110.

Before replacement do inspect for any open or overheated resistors as I stated earlier. Being you only have problems with Red Convergence the plus and minus power supplies should be okay since they are common to both ICs.

Try www.tritronicsinc.com. They have the Hitachi CZ00433 (STK392-150) in stock for $20.11 ($32.43 retail). These are Hitachi OEMs. I've had very good results replacing STK392-110s with these chips. Do check for open or overheated resistors before replacing these chips
