Computer won't power up

The LED on the Bestec power supply comes on when the computer is plugged in. When I press the power on button on the front of the Dell desktop the LED goes out and the computer will not start.

Replace the power supply, and increase the wattage rating. It will run cooler, and more efficiently.

I removed all the peripherals, disconnected the power to the drives, and removed all the cards on the motherboard and checked to see if the unit would power up. I did not so I feel the power supply is defective and I am replacing it.

The power supply is very inexpensive and can most likely be bought from any of your computer retailers, Amazon - Just make sure to confirm the right model type of power supply. BEST to have it tested before replacing it. To make sure that is the issue.. Many computer shops will test for free.

How do you test a Bestec power supply

Hi,
I assume that your power supply was working before and am not sure if it is the power supply that is faulty on your computer or not. Testing a power supply that is connected to a computer is quite easy. All you have to do is try to turn your computer on. See if there is a small light available on your motherboard. This small LED is called the flea light. If there is try to eject the optical drive (CD or DVD drive) on your computer. If the tray ejects, then your power supply is good. If it didn't then it does not supply enough power. If there are no light at all in your computer, then you definitely have a fully busted power supply.
Please do update me on what happened here.

I may be wrong, but, seeing that it is only a 250watt power supply, its was probably cheap. NEVER buy cheap power supplies for PC's. Weak PS's can cause damage to multiple components on a computer.

Bad Power Supply. Weak voltage power rail.

Bestec is a low quality power supply. Used to save the computer manufacturer money.

Also, a Power Supply with a weak voltage power rail will put out enough power to light LED lights, and perhaps spin fans, but not enough power to turn the Processor on, and/or keep it on.

A) ALL the LED lights use less than 1 Watt of power.

B) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts

C) A typical Processor uses 51 to 125 Watts. Depends on what Processor it is.

Replace the Power Supply. Clean the inside of the computer out, with a can of compressed air for computers before installing.

What is the computer manufacturer name, and Model Number. The Model Number is on the back of a desktop computer tower next to the Windows product key, or up on the side of the computer tower.

Bestec atx-250-12z rev d hp model 5187-1098 pc will not start up when pushing button on front of machine green led on back of p/s flashes with power cord plugged in. does this indicate a p/s failure?

I have already replaced mant Bestec ATX-250-12E power supplies because they have an internal failure. Consider yourself lucky if the thing doesn't power up your computer because it has a problem of imposing the +12 volt line onto the +5 Volt line then blowing out the mother board. Sometimes you aren't so lucky because once the damage is done then it is to late to just simply replace that piece of junk. I was lucky with my daughters E-Machine because if she tried pressing the start switch on the front of her computer it would sometimes come on and sometimes not. She just mentioned this to me and I immediately replaced that Bostec ATX-250-12E before it could do any damage to her computer. If anyone has an older E-Machine or an older Gateway machine then it would be a good idea to see if it uses that Bostec-ATX-250- 12E. If it does then go order another power supply, anything but a Bostec, and instead of a 250 watt order a 300 watt or better. I hope that this has helped those that might have this problem before it destroyes *********** boards. Marty
