Thank you so much for your reply. I bet you are right - it's just so annoying to be able to see the screen for a split second..then nothing. Gr-r-r. We certainly live in disposable times so shopping I will go. Thanks again for your information.

My viewsonic is only about 2 years old.  The left side of the screen is almost black with slightly lighter as it goes to the right.  But this is pretty grey and almost unreadable.  It tends to get a little better as it warms up but is hard to read even if you leave it on for days.  It does have a screen saver so the same image is not left on forever.  Any ideas?  Got it at Fry's Electronics

My screen is black when on. If powered off/on screen will appear for a split second. Is there something to do with a defective wire/coonection that is missing 2 of the 15pins? Is this fixable? Any solution? I have unpluged and tried connecting with a different cpu, seems the problem is with this same monitor.

This is only an educated guess based on my years of computer and electrinics experiance. I believe the problem is the AC inverter that supplies current to the monitors back light,it powers up and fails. the monitor is working but without the back light you get a blank screen. The problem is fixable, but the delema is that for a technician to troubleshoot and repair the problem may cost as much as replacing the monitor since the prices have dropped so much in the last few years.

Hi! My Viewsonic VA721 LCD Color Monitor's screen is getting darker over time. I've had it for about 5 years. Is it just getting "old" and worn out or is there something I can do to correct...

It can be that the power supply is dying due to bad caps (or worn out backlight lamps) as shown in my pictures here:
http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Viewsonic%20VA721/
It is old monitor so it may not be worth spending on it.
Please leave rating if it helps.

The power light keeps cycling on and off. and the screen flickers on for a split second.

Look for bad caps, shorted transistors, etc. See my pictures here:
http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Viewsonic%20VA721/

Please read my guide and learn about bad caps and look at the pictures of failed VIEWSONIC and all other brands of monitors.
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

I'm assuming turns black and blue then turns off? First make sure your connectors to your monitor and back of pc are secure. But it sounds like your video card needs to be reseated.
