Where/how did you find that you need a separate upgrade license? If you were told that a free upgrade came with it, then you should not have to purchase anything else to go along with it...

If you are talking about the MS Windows upgrade offer, I believe the offer was only temporary... If you are going from XP to Vista - you could always try calling MS and ask for a new Key - they may provide you one for free... now that Window's 7 is out - they may be thinking you are upgrading to it!

Since joining I have noticed a lot of driver issues?

I have personally answered driver issues people are not able to find drivers for their hardware installations. Even with Win 7 which has been great about providing the drivers needed during an install more so than prior operating systems. Still there is one stray driver that may not be covered. If is most important to make sure you save your drivers to disc or store them where you can resource them if you need them. Drivers will make an install or break one. This is how important they are to your computer functioning properly.
Even purchasing a driver program can be helpful for the upgrade or just keeping up with the Joneses. I use Driver Genius there are a few of them to to had to solve driver upgrade matters or for gathering driver information and finding the proper drivers to install. Other methods are P2P programs such as Ares or torrent programs from the Internet which can get those hard to find drivers.
The best way is to keep all of your software that came with your computer for all of your drivers which are installed when you purchased the computer. Or purchased upgrade devices they come with the software drivers to install them with. Hold those like gold because they are your easiest way to reinstall having these on board will save you loads of time and frustration when something happens to your computer. Most manufacturers of devices will have a Web Page you can access to get those drivers as well. Make a list of the drivers you have on board your computer. Spend the time to make a back up of your drivers which can be done using a driver software program will offer a backup so that you can get them later if you need them after a crash or an upgrade or a driver fails.
Most people do not like to pay for drivers, who does?
I will go to great lengths to have my drivers available this is the last resort I will go to is a pay for driver site. To many resources out there to not have to go that route. I have downloaded over 1 million drivers one because I need them to repair peoples computers. Two I have them on a DVD disc I insert into computer drives and get those hard to find drivers installed. Three you can obtain that many drivers from btjunkie.org just type drivers in the search for any operating system you need a driver for.
There are over 1 million or more drivers out there to be had just from one torrent site. You will need a torrent software download program to download torrents. I have found two that I use the first is Bitcomet.com and the second is Utorrent.com. Search for the largest driver files can get for all operating systems just use the search box to find those downloads. They are free everything explained here is free no charge for any of it. Just your time and a few discs that is all.
So when you need that driver for your computer you will have it when your software is calling for them. Slip them into your DVD ROM drive, then go to devices, hardware, point to your disc more than likely the driver will be found. It is rare that those large drivers discs I downloaded will not have the drivers I need for any computer. Hope this assists you with driver issues in the future.

Windows Installation Disc VS Windows Upgrade Disc -NOT THE SAME-

Having Trouble Booting To Your Windows Upgrade Disc?

...Upgrade discs aren't bootable discs. To repair a windows installation, you must use either a system repair disc or, better yet, a windows installation disc (genuine Retail/OEM discs are pretty much your only option to completely reinstall your windows operating system, unless you own a previous full installation disc of a previously released Windows version (such as XP or Vista), in which case you could install that windows operating system and then upgrade to a newer windows OS like windows 7. however if you ever need to reinstall windows 7, you would either need to reinstall the older windows OS, then upgrade to the newer one.

If that isn't clear, I'll sum it up....

Let's say you bought a computer, that computer had windows xp home edition. Maybe you wanted to upgrade from Windows XP/Windows Vista or Windows 7?
Well in order to switch from Windows XP/Vista to Windows 7, (or even from Windows 7 home premium- to windows7 Pro or Ultimate), then you must either:
A) Buy an upgrade disc and upgrade to the newer desired version.
B) Or, Buy a Retail Copy of the version you want to install. (keep in mind that a retail Windows 7 disc can be used to perform an upgrade rather than to competely wipe the hard disc and perform a clean install (delete partitions, reformat, and perform a new windows installation), if you so choose.

The bottom line is, you cannot Install a fresh clean copy of windows using an upgrade disc. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and Retail Windows Operation System Installation Setup Discs are "Bootable Discs". Windows Upgrade Discs are NOT bootable. (unless one where to "modify that particular disc, which is not legal).

You will have to buy Microsoft Office 2007. Which they no longer sell so it has to be Office 2010 or try free OpenOffice.

Hi-

Did you upgrade the operating system for your new computer? try to check the compatibility and if its compatible just install it on you new computer using the disc or software for the program. if you don't have a disc, try looking for a trial version and put it in the serial number that you have when you bought it.

Hope this helps

Microsoft Works 8.0

If the full version was part of the computer when you bought it, you will need to contact Best Buy to get the Works CD. They should have supplied you with one when you purchased the computer.

If it was a trial versionr and you later purchased the full version from Microsoft, you would want to contact Microsoft and let them know what happened.

In my previous experiences with both companies, you are probably in for a fight with Best Buy, but Microsoft is usually pretty good about righting the situation.

Purchased product and extended download service (knew my old computer was about to die) got new computer and it offered me free Norton, so I accepted that thinking I could put in my proper Norton later on,...

Most Software is not Transferable which makes it hard at times. The Free Trail you accepted from Norton does and will Expire on that date. The only way your going to get a Full Version on your new Computer is to Purchase a new License. I know it does not seam fair, but these large companies just go by the rules.

Need 25-character Vista key to buy backups from MS!

Hello John,

Unfortunately none of the PC manufacturers, with the exception of Toshiba and Dell, ship with recovery disks anymore. Instead, you have the option to create recovery disks after you purchase the computer. HP for example, used 3 DVD-R's to create recovery disks. And when you use those discs to recover your system it will revert it back to the way it was when you purchased it. So unfortauntely, the only way to get a set of recovery discs is to purchase them from HP. They cost about $30 on average. And unless you want to just purchase a new full copy of windows, purchasing the recovery discs are the only way to recover your system... legally.

To order HP's discs, just go to their support site at www.hp.com and search for your model number. It will then give you the instructions on how to order your specific discs.
