My Sony Handycam DCR-HC52 won't play tapes. Moments after inserting a tape, I get a flashing error code of C:31:23 and it says to reinsert the cassette.

Hi,

Ok.

First, make sure that the write protect tab on the tape is not applied.

The C error code usually mean media problems...do this...

  • Unplug the camera from ac and battery...
  • Turn camera power to VCR and let it sit for 15sec...(THIS DRAINS THE CIRCUITRY)
  • Turn off camera
  • Put battery back in and turn camera back on...
  • If your still getting this code then there has been an internal malfunction that requires service.
The first code has to do with the heads on the recorder not functioning and the second code is that there is an error in the transport system. This is what moves the recording media so that it may record/play back.

Once again, I wish that I had better news for you.More often, i have instructed the people to send the cam for repair.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Do accept the solution, if 100% satisfied from my service!!

Tape mechanism in camcorder is defected and cause can be broken cam gear or some thing similar. Mechanism will be replaced in camcorder and qualified camera tech can do it properly.
I can provide you mechanism part number info for DCR-HC52 if you want to replace it by yourself.
Thanks.

When i put a tape in it ejects it..then a tape with a slash appears on the screen

you are prohibited from recording on thips tape. This is because the red tab on the side of the tape that faces you when you are inserting the tape inside the camera has been put in 'SAVE' position . to be able to record o the tape you need to use your fingernail to slide the red tab to the 'REC' position.

Ive extracted the following article for you from wilkepedia to help you understand this issue:
Tape and recording protection
250px-8mm_cassette_erase_tab.jpg magnify-clip.pngThe write-protect switch (right) prevents accidental erasure. .
To prevent the recording on the tape from being erased, there is a small write-protect tab that can be moved to one of two positions, labeled "REC" and "SAVE". Comparing the sliding tab to a door, the tape is in the "REC" position is when the "door" is open and the "SAVE" position when it is closed. (Not all tape cases have markings for this information!) The tape can only be recorded on (or recorded over) when this tab is in the "REC" position. This is an improved version of the VHS write-protect tab, which prevents erasure after it has been (permanently) broken off.

When I insert a tape, the screen flashes "reinsert cassette".

Hit your camera several times with a flat hand (bottom, tape side). Its strange but my problem was solved. On internet I found maybe 10 or 15 other people who did the same.  Really works!

Sony ccd trv218e, recording & playing back does'nt work

I had that problem also and I found that using smaller tapes helped. I was using the 120 minute tapes, I think they may be too heavy.

Eject light comes on after I start playing the tape

ksmitheram,

I had the same problem with my camcorder just awhile ago. This can reflect a low battery. Try plugging in the camcorder for a couple of hours without using it. Then try recording or playing back the tape with it plugged in. Unplug it and check again. If this does not work you may have to replace the tape head.

C:32:11 message flashes, cassette eject won't work, camera doesn't work

Just had this problem myself... called Sony. Here is what I did to fix this:

1. Turn off power
2. Open the LCD Display
3. Press "Reset" with paperclip/pen
4. Unplug ANY wires connected to the camcorder
5. Eject battery
6. Plug in DC charger
7. Power on
8. Attempt to eject tape
9. At this point, the metal tape holder comes out but refuses to open... slightly "close" the portion of the camcorder that has the button to eject the tape, and then open it fully again (you'll hear a click, this signals the device that the 'hatch' is open and to eject).
10. The metal door *should* pop out and allow you to withdraw the tape.

I've tried 4 different cassettes and about 2 seconds after hitting play, I get the error every time... my solution: Not going to try to play my tapes on the camcorder anymore... will find another player to play Hi8 MP cassettes. Unknown if able to record to tape as of yet.

That is the "LOAD" error code.

However, to service the C:31 code, Sony recommends you do the following:

  1. Turn off the camcorder.
  2. Remove the battery or disconnect the AC power adapter for 60 seconds.
  3. Insert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter.
  4. Turn on the camcorder.
  5. If the error message appears, service may be required.
If your camcorder still shows the same error code, then you'll have to send in your camcorder for service.
