Question about Dell Dimension 3100 PC Desktop
You may, but it would probably get you fired, if you check your license agreement and/or terms of employment. Just because their security methods are cheesy and arbitrary doesn't mean they can't catch you and fire you for circumventing them. An HTTP tunnel with a portable version of Firefox running off a flash drive is one way. The firewall can see the encrypted traffic, but they don't know what's in it. If they are already using tunnels for secure traffic it might not set off alarms, but if they see a tunnel all by itself, they'll freak out and trace it right back to your work computer's IP address. A cgi proxy would be better, but most of the public ones get blocked, even before sites like Facebook. You could also run a cgi proxy server from a remote location, but they can still trace that traffic and figure it out.
Many times, they can't bother with individual breaches or maybe they don't have the resources to run individual anomalous traffic to ground. This is primarily why they do this arbitrary blocking. It's a shotgun solution designed to reduce their network overhead and reduce, but not eliminate, a threat vector for malicious software.
It's ham-fisted and ignorant, because it goes too far on the side of limiting their own users and not far enough on the side of network security. Every time a web resource gets good enough to gain widespread popularity, it's going to get blocked in this model. Of course it's part of a larger "comprehensive strategy", but the bottom line is that they don't care enough to look for ways to shore up their capability and security by other methods to accommodate their user's desires.
You and your coworkers need to complain loudly and don't let them off the hook.
