Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have small Refrig Whirlpool Model ETOMSRXTBOO made in Dec 2007. It is not cooling. It tries to start but you can immediately hear it click off. Prior to not cooling at all - it would cycle on and off quickly for a few days. What is the likely problem? - is it something that can be easily fixed? or will it cost more to fix than it is worth? only cost about $ 350

Sounds to me like its your start relay. #15 on the schematic (click to view)

Easy way to tell if the start relay is bad is by simply removing it from the compressor’s control pod and shaking it. If you hear any rattling, it’s fried.

The other, more ominous possibility is that the compressor itself is to blame. You can check this with your ohm meter. Set it on the lowest setting and then measure the resistance between each of the three pegs sticking out from the compressor in the control pod– the same ones that the start relay and overload connect to. Should read something in the low ohms. If the reading between any two pegs is infinite resistance, then one of the windings in the compressor motor is burned out. You should also measure from one of the compressor pegs to ground with your ohm meter on the highest setting. If you read anything, the compressor has developed a path to ground and is bad.

good luck

Refrig won't cool on either freezer or refrig side. Confirmed manual settings & allowed 24 hrs for cooling. Is there a reset switch somewhere other than manual switches inside refrig?

check that the compressor is working by feeling for motor vibrations at the compressor, hot compressor unit or hot fins or back wall of the fridge
if there is not heat then the compressor is not working
call a technician as it could be a start/run capacitor failed or compressor seized
get a quote as some compressor replacements cost as much as a new fridge
check that the utility power is getting to the fridge/freezer

If Fridge working fine now, the problem may be is Hydro Grid.

When the fridge just start, the compressor is running with high pressure of Freon. If Hydro power has voltage surge or power Off/On ( suddenly ), the compressor should be stuck, the overheat protection switch will actived, than fridge will stop working.

The noice of "click" - properly is overheat switch auto-reset.

When the refrig compressor tries to kick on it immediately kicks off..is this a relay switch?

With whirlpool, yes. You probably hear a hum then a click afterards. This is a really common problem with this brand. Unplug the machine and take the relay which is located on the side of the compressor off. once you have done that shake it. If you hear any rattling or see any kind of black stuff come out of it replace the relay. This is a really easy job. If you have never had it changed before then I'm 99% sure thats the only problem you'll have.

Hear relay clicking on and off, refrigerator is

I would suggest repairing the unit . For less than $ 75.00 , compared to the cost of a new refrig . The problem is the overload/relay , which is plugged onto the side of the compressor , with 2 or 3 wires going to it . This is easily replaceable . If you had given the model number , I could have given you a part number . Be sure to take it ( model number ) with you , when getting the part , so you get the correct part .

My six year old whirlpool refrig runs but does not cool. It had been working, just quit. We cleaned it etc but no help. Everything runs but does not cool.

I wouls start with this,
do you hear an odd clicking,
pull the machine out, take off the back
and listen, it make take upto ten minutes
unplug the mchine, and take off the back
try touching the compressor, this is a heat check so be careful,
then take of the electrical box connected to the compressor, thats your overload and relay if its one unit shake it,,
if it rattles thats your problem
let me know

It's likely the start device on the compressor. If you hear clicking sound every few minutes - that's likely it. Turn off the fridge, remove the start device from the compressor and shake it - if small pieces looking like sand start falling out, replace the start device. Part number is on the device itself.
