When you turn on the laptop, does it have a beep/ing noise? If does how many beeps? When the RAM or memory being upgraded, make sure that the memory is compatible with this laptop model. Coz not all of the laptop memories will work. It has its own limit depending on the model of you laptop. Please reply.

Before you buy a computer make sure the repair is accessible. this needs a depot to check all hardware parts.

Dell 1703fpi

Dell 1703fpi LCD monitor,

http://philadelphia-pa.americanlisted.com/computers/dell-1703fpi-17-lcd-monitor-vgadvi-usb-hub-50-phoenixville_21225579.html

I got that part Dan.........

What I need is what Model Number of Dell Inspiron it is.
This is on the Bottom of the Inspiron laptop.

Why?
Because I do not know if the Dell Inspiron laptop you have, has a DVI port, or a VGA port; for an external monitor......

Generic information while I wait.........

Example of Digital Visual Interface port, and corresponding cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

Example of Video Graphics Array port,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

Can be on the side, or back of laptop.

Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect the matching video cable from the external monitor; to the laptop.
Now turn the laptop on.....

By factory default settings, the display should now show on the external monitor. (Dell 1703fpi)
No?

There are at least 3 display options available;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external monitor
3) External monitor ONLY

Press, and hold down on the Fn key. (Usually 2nd key from left on bottom row of keyboard)
AT THE SAME time tap once on the Display Toggle-Over key.

Which one is that? Dunno.
Laptop model number was not stated.
For a Dell Inspiron though, it's usually the F8 key.
(F1 through F12 keys at the top of the keyboard)

Hold the Fn key down, and at the same time tap once on the F8 key.
Still no?
Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F8 key.

IF, F8 is the correct key for Display Toggle-Over, and there is no display on the external Dell 1703fpi; then I suggest you have a problem with the video chipset; on the motherboard.......

Awaiting reply in a Comment.

Regards,
joecoolvette

Dell inspirion 2650 bad video as unit warms up.

This sounds like the video/graphics chipset. Do you have another way to output the external video? There are USB monitors out there....

My screen monitor flickers almost every second.what should i do?it is very disturbing.

There can be fault in the inverter drive, the back light circuit or the main power board.
You will need to open the mother board and check on all leads on the mother board- use a magnification observing lens.
Tighten all connectors and solder suspected joints. Check with an external display to confirm the display circuit and then pin point to the display unit in detail of the drive section.

My internal speeker not working

Dell Inspiron Desktop systems have no internal speaker for audio, only a beep speaker on the motherboard for no post diagnosis. For audio you'll need a set of powered external speakers.

My dell inspiron powers up and idles but the screen is black and no hd is spinning i also took former advice and connected a external moniter did the fn+f8 to toggle lcd and nothing happened the computer...

Your motherboard is "officially" dead. This must be replaced in order for system to function. If this unit is > 3-4 years old it will not pay to have this board replaced. It's the "heart" of the entire machine. Replace laptop.
Best of luck,

My dell inspiron screen stays black and powers up

Try this

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3581893-how_to_troublehoot_a_portable_compouter_

You might also try an external monitor and see if you get any video that way (Fn+F8 toggles to enable external video)

No power or lights on my inspiron 2650 laptop

First you need to test your adapter first not the power cord.Check that your adapter can give out according to the adapter spec..maybe 16-19ou V.If it does and still you laptop don't turn on then you have motherboard problem.
takecare.

Try this:

Shut down, unplug the AC adaptor, removed the battery, and hold the power button for up to 1 minute to discharge.

Make sure there are no stuck keys.

Restart.
