You need to purchase a VHS head cleaner or clean the heads and pinch rollers by hand. remove cover and lid to drive system. you will see all the tape guides, rollers and heads. use Q-tips and denatured alcohol and clean every thing the tape touches. swap q-tips as they get dirty.

We purchased this unit a few years ago, but used it mainly as a DVD player. We have a few boxes of VHS movies we want to convert but the VHS "eats" tapes. I removed the top cover to see if there was d

If it was never used and now is eating tapes, there is a chance that it needs to be cleaned. The fix means that you have to take it apart and see if the tape is seating all the way, if the transport mechanics are picking up the tape and that all the rollers and guides are working. There are also rubber belts on the machine and they stretch. That means that some pulleys are not working like they are designed to and therefor the tape is bunching up and it is ruining the tape.

The camcorder eats tapes in record or playback modes

O heck my friend, the reason cameras eat tapes is simply because the capstan and heads need cleaning, odd how everyone forgets cleaning these last 10 years.

Vhs player eating tape

Hunnn....Eats the tapes, with salt & paper?..just a joke!
The tape runs on a guide ( sort of a tiny ledge )when it is fully engaged. The tape cartgage is loaded ' sucked ' in with gears that drop the cartage on top of other switches to give direction, so that "fingers" pull the tape towards the reading\recording heads. When the tape IS aligned properly, BUT is locked in the proper position the tape will NOT touch the upper or lower "ledge" that keeps it accross the heads. When the tape is NOT aligned the upper or lower tape WILL touch causeing damage. OPEN THE CARTGAGE ,Look to see if the upper & lower of the tape is damaged. Now when you say "eats the vhs tape" Does the tape comes out WRINKLE, CRINKLED,CRAMPED UP??? Then that could be ANY wheel with a black rubber rim. going bad. replace if you can. but they are VERY HARD TO FIND if u don't know what u are doing.

unit need to be cleaned or have parts replaced if they got bad enough.
only, only, only use the more expensive JVC tapes. They keep their tension far better than cheaper brands. Also, they won't rub off their oxide coatings on the heads as easily, avoiding the 'clogging' of the heads (which thereby requires constant cleaning-further damaging the heads).

VCR eating tapes

Is the vcr in a cold room? the heads might have dew on them
or need cleaned. If it keeps doing it you probly wouldn't want to fix it at a shop. you can buy new vcr's with remote at walmart now for $25-$30 I think. Hey you can try the old treatment
that i always do. Try unplugging the vcr from the electrical
outlet for a hour or maybe even longer sometimes that will resit
everything in it and it will work right.

VCR eating tapes when attempting to rewind

VCRs are so cheaply priced these days that it's not worth the time and trouble to fix them or have them repaired. If you fix one worn or slipping belt, another problem isn't far behind.
