Question about Dell Vostro 1500 Notebook
1. When you said it is not working, can you not receive and send email at all? 2. Can you confirm with your IT department that they are not blocking outside connections to your email?
For question no.1, continue with the troubleshooting steps below. For q.no.2, if the connection is blocked outside of the company premises, you cannot do anything.
From your Virgin Media internet connection, go into the command prompt. (To access go to Start, All Programs,Accessories) On that box, type:
telnet yourmailserver.com 25
And then press Enter. This command will check if it can access the mail server outgoing port.
This is for the incoming port:
telnet yourmailserver.com 110
I assumed that your mail service provider is using the default email ports. But to make sure, go into this page;
Under the domain name, type the name which follows after your id. Example, firstname.lastname@example.org; you need to get the myemail.com. That is the domain name. After that, press Report and wait for the page to fully load again. You need to locate the "MX Records" portion and get the name of your mail server.
Here is a sample result;
Your MX records that were reported by your nameservers are:
10 mail.myemail.com 184.108.40.206
[These are all the MX records that I found. If there are some non common MX records at your nameservers you should see them below. ]
So your mail server is the one that look like mx.myemail.com. Go back into the command prompt and do the telnet command again but replacing the real domain name. If you got a connection timed out result, test to directly connect with the provider's internet modem. If the result is also connection timed out, contact Virgin Media again and then tell them that the outgoing and incoming port is blocked. If receiving email works but not with outgoing, ask them if they have an outgoing server which you can use and what are the settings.
