First check that fluid level is full, next see if the return spring has come off the pedal under the floor, you will have to remove the floor plate to do this next make sure none of the pins have come out of the pivot points for the brake and clutch and shift lever. If the pins are all in place and there are no broken clevis pins broken then you will have check the shaft gear splines on the transmission case to see if the bolt holding it on is stripped or the nut has come loose. If none of these solves the problem the next step is to see if the drive shaft hydraulic over electric switch on the back of the transmission has not come apart or the coil is shorted out. If this does not help you then give me some more details of the oil and it's color and smell and if it feels gritty. And post back here and I will help you more with the next trouble shooting sequence

125cc Kawasaki dirt bike, cranks on first kick, idles but won't run in any gear, doesn't die out but doesn't seem to engage gear, possible problems?

Does it jerk forward when you put it into gear and die? Or you put it into gear and the bike doesn't move when you let the clutch out? Badly adjusted clutch in both cases. Worst case, you need new clutch plates and springs.

Drive train locked up while driving in 5th gear. Vehicle would not move unless clutch was engaged will in neutral.

Hi Tom:
If you're lucky, a linkage has become disengaged. Trace from the gearshift to the transmission.
What happens to the gearshift lever when you try to shift?
If it won't move and the linkage is not disconnected, try to manually move the shift levers where they enter the trans.
Also if you have a custom shifter it is possible that a pin has slipped.
Have fun chasing this one.

I need 2,3 & 4 gear for Yamaha 1100 special 1982 model

Instructions
    • 1 The gears on a motorcycle run in this order: first, neutral, second, third, fourth and fifth. When you are moving, shifting up from first gear will skip over neutral and shift you right into second gear. The only time that shifting up from first will get you into neutral is when you are not moving.
    • 2 Pull in the clutch lever and tap the gear lever down until it stops. This will signify first gear. Pressing the gear lever down will shift you down one step and pressing it up will shift up one step.
    • 3 Tap the gear lever up one click while still holding in the clutch. This will put the bike into neutral.
    • 4 Start the bike. The bike needs to be in neutral to start.
    • 5 Hold in the clutch lever and tap the shifting lever down to shift to first gear.
    • 6 Release the clutch slowly and give it just enough gas to get moving.
    • 7 Listen to the motor to know when you need to shift. If the engine is making a low grumbling noise, then it will need to be shifted down. If it is making a high squealing noise, then it needs to be shifted up.

Acting like it doesn't want to go into gear

Well i got a camry same engine I am getting my car checked this Friday because it feels loose on 2nd and 4th gears. I might end up with the same problem if I fail to get it repaired through payday advance. I'll let you know I checked my linkage and everything seems to be ok .. There is no looseness. But shifting into second gear you cant feel it ... I'll post it up when I manage to find out..Thanks for your patience.

Hello.Owner of 1990 XT600 2KF,30.000 km in very good condition. after een steep ride in first gear,I cannot shift to first gear.It seems stuck.Engine off: no problem changing gears. What can this be: Oil...

If the clutch is operating fine as well as the shift mechanism, it's either a bearing or a internally cracked case that's allowing the bearing to move. First gear is actuated on the rear transmission shaft that Is common to the drive sprocket on the left side of the bike, and an idler gear that engages the kick start lever to the clutch basket. This is located under the right engine case cover. Remove the chain and sprocket and check the shaft to see if it will move up and down in the bearing. If that's solid, remove the right side cover and check the case and bearing under the idler gear. I have had Yamaha cases crack at that bearing area and cause that same problem. Good luck!

What did I break? entering freeway first and second gear seamed fine, never got into 3rd gear, something broke. All gears were lost. Shift lever moves but seems loose. I can hear click where it would...

It sounds like the "middle drive" is damaged. You should seek professional help with this problem as a number of special tools are need for disassembly and reassembly.

The jeep always acts like its in gear it will move forward in nutral and will not go in reverse

They locking nut has come loose on the shift control arm on the side of the transmission, you need to put it in park and adjust it so the arm is all the way forward and the shift lever is all the way into the Park position, this should get rid of the car moving when the shifter lever is not in reverse.

1977 ty 250. locks in gear. 1,2,3, or 4 th. and cannot be changed

You have nothing to loose. Try the adjustment. Try it a couple of times. Chances of a bent shift fork are 50/50. Drain the oil and remove the right side casing, Look at the shift mechanism. Is anything loose or a spring missing? Remove the shift shaft. Is the shaft bent?

Pleas rate this solution. Thanks!

1999 F350 crew cab 4x4 ford, gear shift lever

Ok ready to stand on your head under the dash?
It's doable... there is a flange connected to the gearshift lever under the steering column. If you remove the lower dash cover where the fuses are, you should be able to see it when you move the gear shift lever... look around on the floor of the truck to see if you dropped a star-headed bolt or two... these bolts worked loose on my superduty and made shifting very difficult..it was an easy fix... let me know how you do on it.
