This is called unwanted vignetting. this is actually caused by the edges of the lenses of lens hood especially when you are using filters on your lenses.

Sounds like your image stabilizer got damaged by the fall. You'll have to get your camera serviced by an authorized Nikon service center.

I have a Nikon D80 SLR camera, and have purchased an Opteka 650 x 1300 mm zoom lens (fit on). I have changed the setting on the camera to manual, and it will now take photographs, however the images are...

You can't meter through that lens. If the images are too dark, either slow down the shutter speed or open the aperture. Keep going until the picture looks okay on the monitor. If you know how to use the histogram, that's even better. If you go too far and get images too light, reverse the process (faster shutter speed or smaller aperture).

If you have another light meter, you can use that to get a ballpark exposure to start with. Alternatively, take a reading with your other lens at the longest zoom.

Image reduced by dark edges

An adapter tube has to flare out at the end or it will cut the corners off at the wide angle setting. Telephoto should be ok though.

You did not say what sensitivity setting you had the camera set at- the higher the sensitivity the lighter the picture. Actually- all the image information is there so all that needs to be done is to edit the image lighter in a graphics editing program[You did say whether or not you import images to a computer] Come back back with more info on what you do with the images.

Be sure that you are capturing images in the right shooting mode. For example, if shooting a night scene your image will be underexposed and dark if the image is captured in the Program Auto mode for regular photography, or in any mode other than Night Scene. Be careful that when capturing images, nothing is obstructing the flash.
