Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

1tb WD external hardrive not mounting, can't access my info ?

I recently bought a WD 1tb external hardrive, I formatted it and manage to transfer all my info to it about 200g out of 3 different computers. It was working fine until 2 days ago. Now when I connect it to any of my computers it doesn't mount and when I opened my utility disk it doesn't give me the option to repair it or verify it. I can see it on the disk utility but no on the desktop or finder. I ran Disk warrior but it says that the drive can not be rebuilt because the file system is not supported? the only 2 options available to me in disk utility is 1. formatting which I can not do as all my work is in the drive. or 2. restoring? I am not sure what that entails and really can't afford to loose all the info. can anyone help???

I am running the WD on a Mac book pro mac os x 10.4.11 but also have the option of a 10.3.9 my bf's computer.

Many thanks in advance for any help given! I would really appreciate some tips and help, will loose my last year work if I can't access info!

Kind regards!!

    Dear M5fanatic,

Thank you for your answer, I am guessing my only option is to restore the drive ? will that help me access the info ? do you now of any useful how-to online?

the last thing it did it is showed me another drive inside the drive with the name I had given to the hard drive it is letting me repair and verify that but it is taking 2 hours and stillhave seen no change ? shall i just be patient? or stop that and try to restore it ?

thank you in advance for any help! I am desperate as I need some or the work !

First of all, restoring a hard drive rarely affects data stored on it. I usually just adjusts the supporting software that allows it to run properly. Definately check the manual prior to restoring it, though. Formatting it will absolutely erase everything (unless your the FBI). I'm about 99% sure that restoring it will leave your stored data completely unaffected.
You're better off performing the work using the newest OS available. BTW, your BF can plug into the internet and get upgraded to 10.4.11 as well for free and it doesn't take long.

Worst case scenario is that you have to back up those computers again. I would say that you should go ahead and RESTORE the drive. It shouldn't take too long and will keep your saved files safe. After looking into it a little more after posting, that's what I would do. I am running several computers, most of which are Mac as well. 2 G4's and a G5. Not usually many problems with portable hard drives.

Have you "Formatted" it before you used it, If NOT, Right Click on drive and select "Format" format NTFS. After this you should be able to use the drive as normal. Also Right Click, MY Computer, choose "Manage" when it comes up select Disk Management, and you can initialise it and format there.

Just plugged in new wd 1tb hardrive to windows xp computer blue light flashing on book front but no icon on computer

Brand new?

Did you follow the instructions in the booklet that were packaged with the external disk-drive?

Did you try connecting the unit to a different computer?

Did you take it back to where you bought it, and ask them to demonstrate attaching it to one of their computers, as a demonstration that it works, or to prove that it is "defective" and the seller must replace it?

1tb wd external problem

Dear, What type of file system it is. FA16 supports only up to 4GB but FA32 and NTFS support more. For more info http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm
And, please try to format the drive using FAT32 if its FA16 or NTFS and try.

WD 1TB Hard-drive, worked perfectly now it won't :'(

If you go into Administrative Tools, Computer Management, you will see a tree for disk management. It should be listed there - probably without a drive letter..
You can partition and format there.

To get to administrative tools: Go into your control panel - click on classic view and it is one of the top options.

Simpletech 1TB external HD

Is it formatted and partitioned?
right click on MyComputer>click manage> click disk management > see if it shows up on the bottom right of the window that opens up. If it does> right click > click format. Then you should be able to drag and drop it.

Also, did it come with software. It may require that the software be installed.

Please remember to rate Techs who assist you for free :)
Good luck, Joe
