Question about Computers & Internet
I just bought a brand new acer aspire T180, and I am having problems getting it to log on the internet. My internet is DSL, the computer is ethernet ready. I was told by many people that all I had to do is plug in my internet cable, and I would be connected to the internet. I am unable to get on, so what I am asking is what do I have to do to get in on the internet.
This maybe related to how your router is configured. Please try the following.
Click Start then All Programs then Accessories then Command Prompt. A new window will open. In that window enter the following (contains 1 space before /)--
In the response you should see for one adapter possibly of multiple adapters an
DNS Address(es) (one or more)
To work the following must be true
If the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 then the first three numbers in the IP address and the Default Gateway should match (possibly 192.168.0 or something close). The last number should be different. There should be one or more non 0.0.0.0 DNS addresses. If this is not true please tell me what is wrong in a comment to this problem, I will respond with a solution. please provide your internet service providers name this may help me find his DNS servers for you.
One problem may be no DNS addresses -- this can either be configured into the router or the computer and should have been assigned by your internet service provider.
Assuming the above appears to be right then enter the following commands into the same window as before.
replace (default gateway) including parens with the address from above
may be like 192.168.0.1 with slightly different numbers
ping (default gateway)
It will either time out 4 times or respond with elapsed times.
If this does not time out you are connected to the other device successfully.
then try this command
if this comes back with an error like address not resolved or timeout we have other issues.
If it does not timeout or have an error you should be successfully accessing the internet and there may be a configuration issue with your browser and a proxy entered to work elsewhere.
Please respond to this request with additional information to allow us to find a final solution to your issue.
