Question about Casio FX-115ES Scientific Calculator

Hello,

When you have a fraction output, press the [S<->D] key to convert to decimal, the same key to convert from decimal to fraction. Beware that fraction results are exact, while decimal values are approximate.

However if you cannot stand the sight of a fraction, there is a way to get rid of this type of output.

Here is how you do it.

[SHIFT][MODE][2:LineIO]. All your results will be in decimal. However you will lose a lot of functionalities, such as calculating the logarithm in any base, manipulating radicals.

My advice, if you allow, is to activate the [SHIFT][MODE][1:MathIO] and press the [S<->D] whenever you want a result (be it a fraction or radical) in decimal format.

Hope it helps.

SOURCE: When I divide answers are always given in Fractions. Can I change it to come out in decimals?

To change from Fraction display to Decimal display on the Casio fx-300ES (and probably other calculators)

1) Press the "SHIFT" button

2) Press the "MODE/SETUP" button

3) Press the "2" button

This Changes it to LINEIO (Decimal)

Doing all of the above but pressing the "1" button instead of the "2" puts it back into MATHIO mode (Fraction)

Hope this Helps

(SHIFT)(MODE/SETUP)(2) to change to decimal

SOURCE: Changing result display from fractions to decimals

Struggled with this and found answer on about page 19 of the instructions on the Internet. Answer also appear on paper instructions under: "Displaying Calculation Results...etc just under "Note" Trick is you must have calculator in "LineIO" mode For setting MODE see "Calculation Modes & cal. The calculator has two Input/Output modes: MathIO and LineIO.

LineIO

LineIO is the old way of entering numbers in calculators and results are always displayed as decimal numbers. Some calculators have a fraction feature and would convert a fraction to a decimal number and back.

MathIO

In MathIO you enter expressions as you would by hand or as you see them written in textbooks.

In this mode, results are by default displayed as fraction or fractions/ radicals.

Conversion

To convert the fraction/radical to decimals you just press the [SD] key. If you press again you cycle through all the available display formats.

So you can (if you want) use the MathIO to manipulate expressions and convert only the last result to decimal. By the way, fractions and radicals are generally more accurate than their decimal representations.

SetUP

If however seeing fractions and radicals is too painful, just set the LineIO as your default mode. To do so press [SHIFT][MODE] to open (SETUP), then select [2:LineIO]

If the result is already calculated and displayed, press the
[S<=>D] key It will convert a fraction or radical to decimal. This
is always possible. If the result is decimal it may be converted to a
fraction or a radical (Not always possible).

If the expression to be evaluated is still in the command line and you have not pressed the [=] key, you can force the result to be displayed in decimal format by pressing [SHIFT][=] instead of just [=].

More permanently. If you do n o care for fractions and radicals, set the Input/Output mode to LineIO. To do do press [SHIFT][MODE] to access the (SETUP) screen and select [2:LineIO]

if you do not want to change your settings There are two ways to foecr calculator to display a result in a decimal format.

Press [SHIFT][MODE] to access (Setup) and select [2:LineIO].

Just in case you want to revert to the other IO mode (MthIO)

Press [Shift][MODE][1:MthIO]

- Before pressing the [=] sign to get the result press [SHIFT] key. thus [SHIFT][=] displays a result in decimal format.
- If a result is already displayed and it is not in decimal format (fraction or radical) press the [S<=>D] key to convert it to decimal.
- The [S<=>D] key toggles between formats (fraction/radical to decimal and from decimal to fraction or radical depending on the format used in calculation.)
- That does not mean that every decimal number can be converted to fractions/radical.

Press [SHIFT][MODE] to access (Setup) and select [2:LineIO].

Just in case you want to revert to the other IO mode (MthIO)

Press [Shift][MODE][1:MthIO]

If you do not want to see fractions and radicals anymore just set the calculator input output (I/O) mode to lineIO:

Press [SHIFT][MODE](SETUP) and select [2:LineIO].

If, however, you appreciate the functionalities of the MathIO that allow you to manipulate fractions, radicals, and other nifty things you could not do before, but just want your final results to be in decimal fornat that can be arranged too.

Here is how

Press [SHIFT][MODE](SETUP) and select [2:LineIO].

The calculator has two Input/Output modes, MthIO and LineIO. In MthIO the results are displayed as fractions or as radicals or a mixture of fractions and radicals. What it means, is that in MthIO the calculator does exact calculations. Radicals in denominators are gotten rid of by rationalization, fractions are reduced to the same denominators before addition or subtraction. Fractions are reduced to simplest form.

In LineIO all results are displayed as decimal numbers.

If a result is exact (fractions and radicals) it can be changed to decimal form by pressing the S To D key, the one above the DEL key.

MthIO is the default IO mode. To set it, press SHIFT MODE and select 1:MthIO. To set LineIO as the IO mode, press SHIFT MODE and select 2:LineIO
