Question about Kenmore 3.2 cu. ft. Plus Top Load Washer

Doesn't agitate and spin cycle work when reset

I have a 10 year old Kenmore 70 series washer. It just started making a grinding noise on the regular cycle and the agitator doesn't seem to be working properly, only agitates very slowly. Also When the cycle completes I have to put the dial back to the spin cycle for it to spin the clothes dry, but it does spin then dry. Help

SOURCE: maytag PAV2300AWW Washer makes grinding sound when agitating

Sounds like it is the bearing on the water pump. Take off back plate and replace and remove 3 screws and two hoses (the one hose is a waste line so make sure you have a bucket to empty our waste water) after removing these remove belt on bottom of pump.

SOURCE: the agitator moves slowly and grinding

If this is a Whirlpool manufactured TOP LOADER, an agitation problem can have several causes. Most commonly, this is caused by a broken motor coupling. The following link explains how you can diagnose the problem and repair:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3965207-whirlpool_top_loader_no_spin_problem

I have included parts sources and instructions on how to replace any parts as well.

If this just a simple matter of the agitator not working, but everything else does, you may just have a worn agitator cam assembly, worn agitator dogs, loose agitator bolt, or all of the above. The following link explains what agitator dogs are and how to access them:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608577-replacing_agitator_dogs

Whirlpool manufactured washers use a split agitator design. The top half is known as the "auger, while the lower half is the agitator. Between the two pieces is a cam assembly, with small teflon teeth known as "dogs". There's also an agitator bolt that holds the entire assembly to the center post.

If the auger (top half of the agitator) is slipping, I would suspect the dogs or cam assembly need to be replaced. The part number for the dogs is included in the link I provided. For a little more you can purchase the entire cam assembly which includes the dogs, the cam, the cam seal and thrust bearing.

If the entire agitator appears loose or slipping, check the agitator bolt to ensure it is tight. DO NOT overtighten as this can restrict movement of the agitator or damage it. Tighten until snug.

Last of all, the most expensive problem that can occur, is a failed gearcase (transmission). The gearcase averages between $80 and $160 to purchase. If you wish to replace the part yourself, it is not that difficult. The following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3576575-replacing_a_gearcase_on_whirlpool_manufa

The procedure is rather lengthy, but not as difficult as you would think. It can save you a lot in labor charges.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need. If the model number is correct, the following part numbers you may need:

Motor Coupling 285753A
Agitator Cam Replacement Kit 285809
Agitator Dogs 80040
Gearcase 3360629

NOTE: If you replace the gearcase, replace the motor coupling as well. The sears website will sometimes offer a refurbished gearcase for about half the price of a new one. The part number will end in the letter "R".

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this is helpful to you.

It sounds like the transmission is done. Can't pinpoint what it is exactly, but I would start there.

Won't spin, makes clunking noise, drains fine

If it agitates fine , with normal noise , drains with lid closed , then the problem is probably the transmission .

Hello. Since your machine is 18 years old and the agitation/spin is costly to repair I would definitely recommend a replacement washer.

When this machine is not spinning, the water should still be able to drain, as the motor drives the pump on the same shaft as the coupler for the tranny. Set to the spin setting and depress the lid switch, if the water still does not drain, you may have something stuck in your pump, which would also lock the motor shaft and not allow it to spin or agitate. If the water does drain, check the motor coupler, which is located between the motor and transmission, if broken, the motor will run but there is no drive to the transmission. Hope this helps...

Broken Washer

it could be the direct drive coupling that connects the motor to the transmission. fill it up with water and see if it will agitate, if it will NOT agitate then it is a good chance that this is the problem. 0404472.jpg

worse case scenario is the transmission is bad, but this is unlikely.

You most likely have a broken coupler between the motor and gearcase.
You can buy the part for about $10 or have someone come out and replace it for about $150-200.
If you will post the complete model number from the the washer so I can see which style cabinet you have, I will try to walk you through the repair. It isn't very complicated if you are handy with home repairs.
With the age of the machine it probably just needs a coupler, but it could also have a problem in the transmission or basket drive that has caused the failure.
