Runs full cycle but not draining

Your drain pump or drain line is most likely blocked. When you press "cancel/drain", listen for the humming of the drain pump--it can be hard to hear, especially on the newer "super quiet" models. If the motor is humming, 120v is getting to it and that means the main board is functioning. If you don't hear anything, you'll have to check at the drain motor for broken wires, or, using a meter on a low resistance setting(POWER TURNED OFF, WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR DISCONNECTED FROM PUMP, check across the coil of the motor for an open(break) in the coil which means the drain motor will have to be replaced. Also, CHECK THE FILTER FOR CLOGS! Dishwashers are notorious for getting broken glass, food pieces, etc stuck in the drain pumps or drain hoses leading to the sink or disposal. On certain makes/models, there is a "drain break" clipped to the side of the dishwasher(to prevent backwash of dirty water back into the tub) that can get clogged or have a nasty mold/mildew build-up which can clog it.

KitchenAid fills and drains but won't wash

With a lot of such appliances, the pump motor runs one way to wash, reverse to pump out. Refusal to do this usually is a loose wire, poor connection in the timer, or a wire on wrong. Check the schematic carefully for that.

Dish washer fills but pump does not run

If you hear a humming sound that means that the motor is stuck. There could be something in the pump, or if it is old the motor might be froze due to bad bearings. Look underneath the tank; if you see water damage on and around the motor you may need a new motor, or possibly you can get a pump kit (which has a new seal) that would take care of it. If there is no sound at all you would need to check the wiring for a loose connection. Actually, before that, you need to find out if the timer is sending power to the motor. To check that you need a wiring schematic and the proper test equipment. Just be sure you do not have your hands anywhere close as long as there is power to the machine.

Fills with water and then just humms, no spray/wash action

Hello-   The 'hum' is the motor trying to turn. If the dishwasher has been getting louder recently, then the motor bearing has failed.  The solution for this problem is to replace the motor.  Occasionally the sump gets clogged, but this rarely stops the motor.  The motor is about 125$, and is easy to replace if you can remove and re-install a dishwasher.                       Please acknowledge this posted solution. Thanks- Ed

Dishwasher will not drain

Have you had a new disposer installed lately? If so was the plug in the disposer, where the dishwasher drain line hooks up, knocked out? Seen this many many times. More solutions available if this is not the problem.

If motor needs replacement, is it better to get a NEW dishwasher?

replacement usually costs about 250.00-450.00 usually.. you can look at partsdirect.com or repairclinic.com for the parts.. both even dive you a schematic so you can see how they both go together

Unit hums, but no water or washing action

if the dishwasher is newly installed then a common problem with that would be a wire probable came off the capacitor. if the dishwasher is more than a year old then the motor has probable siezed and needs to be replaced.

Loud Humming Noise

You're describing vague, conflicting information. At first glance, I would think you have something stuck in the pump. But then it would be there in the rinse-only cycle also.
The anti-bacterial mode heats the water up to about 180F. This kills bacteria, and it also speeds up the action of the detergent. It could be dissolving whatever is in there.
The humming noise wasn't there in the rinse mode... The heater isn't on in the rinse mode - everything else is. But I've NEVER heard a heating element hum.

Cleaning the filter:
The filter is in the back in the bottom right. It's cover is held on by two 1/4 in screws. Under that is a large grate, and I sometimes find stuff clogging the screen (underwater, toward the center of the machine.) I'd start by looking there.

Good luck!
