Question about Craftsman Garden

3 Answers

I have a 20 HP Briggs & Stratton engine on my Craftsman LT 1000 Riding Mower. I bought it used and have cut my 2 acre land with it once. It performed very well. I stored it in my garage on my trailer on my return trip home. After about one and a half weeks I went to start it today to move it off the trailer. It turned over fine, but would not start. Almost seemed as if though it wasn't getting any spark or wasn't getting any gas. I pulled the plug and replaced it with a new one - the old plug had a weak spark. I then pulled off the fuel filter and found it to be fine. When I pulled off the fuel line to the carb, gas came back out of the line. When I pulled the gas line off the filter from the fuel tank side no gas came out. What else should I check? My email address is deckyates@gmail.com. Thank you. Donald Yates

Do you mean the fibrous filter surrounding the pleated filter?

  • deckyates Oct 06, 2009

I took out the fibrous filter that surrounds the pleated filter and tried cranking to no avail. The fibrous filter was dirty - do you think some trash may have gotten into the carb? Also, does this model (Craftsman T-1000) mower have an electric fuel pump?

My Craftsman riding mower will not start unless shorting across the solenoid then it will start,. I replaced the solenoid and the same problem. Any suggestions, I checked the fuse as well.

It could be that the carb float is sticking and or flooding..
Give the carb bowl a few wraps with the wooden end of a hammer to maybe un-stick the float..
Try a strong choke while starting - even if that means taking the air cleaner off and choking it manually by covering the intake..

Best of luck !

Check the intake filter. I hate those. i always take them out. You either have no spark or no fuel if any engine doesn't start.

Here is one solution for doing it and I will repeat with the Briggs suggested maintenance procedure.

Scroll down to ADJUSTING OVERHEAD VALVES.
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/engines/support/frequently-asked-questions/Servicing%20the%20valves/

Remember, proper setting of the overhead valves is important to insure that the ACR (automatic compression release) system operates correctly enabling a much easier start. Good luck.

24 hp Briggs Stratton sears riding mower engine wont start unless you use start fluid cleaned filter have flow to engine

If the mower starts and continues to run after injecting, you may want to make sure the choke is working properly. If the choke plate is not closing all the way, it will make cold starts difficult.

What kind of oil do i put in a cub cadet mower LT 1050 26 hp

Straight 30 weight oil (SAE 30). If it is a Briggs & Stratton, should take about 2 qts to fill. You can also use synthetic, 5w-30 in colder weather (40°F and below) or 10w30 for 40°F and above.

New Craftsman 20hp Briggs & Stratton 42" riding mower, Model 917.289104. Loses power, dies while mowing. Will not start unless sits 20-30 minutes. Problem began second time I owed with it. ...

first make sure the air intake screen on top of engine is not clogged with debris if thats not a concern you could have a faulty ignition coil etc your engine should have a two year warranty and can be serviced at no charge to you at your local briggs service dealer make sure and check your manual for the fine print though. Briggs makes a great engine and very rarely have I ever seen a problem allthough if you were to have an engine issue it will accur during the first few hours of opperation good luck

lift your seat and look at the label that you got your model number from. to the right of the model number is the serial number. the first six digits of the serial number is the date your tractor was made - for example: serial no. 060802D002756 would make the unit made June 8, 2002

Drain oil... it is full of gasoline due to a bad float pin and rubber gromet in your carb. When your float pin and gromet fail, gas just keeps flowing into your carburetor, eventually flooding your motor with gas and oil mix.
