Problem: the camera turns itself off when I press the zoom lens bar. The zoom option shows on the screen - but either gives no response at all and then turns the whole camera off, or turns off immediately. It does this even with new batteries. Other lenses and camera functions are all working fine.

if u look at the bottom of the screen or something, u will usually see a thing that shows how much u zoomed in or out. if u wait for the thing to disappear off the screen, it should not zoom back out or in when u do it. if that doesnt work then i cant help u.
In either mode, you're zooming by turning the zoom ring on the lens? In live view mode, if you zoom in by pressing the magnifying glass button, all you're doing is zooming the display, not the image itself.
There are several causes for this to happen. 1. The lens assy is out of alignment and stuck; stalling the motor. 2. The motor itself is defect 3. If you can hear the motor working , then it will be a stripped plastic gear between motor drive and lens assy. DIY repair not recommended (possible)
Its an error code and shows problem of Lens mechanism. Lens focus / zoom motor is stuck that's why camera gives out of focus image. You need to replace Lens Assembly and it would cost you more then camera worth.
MY CAMERA IS HAVING TROUBLE TURNING ON. THE OTHER DAY I TOOK A PICTURE AND IT SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF IT WITH THE ZOOM LENS OUT. NOW WHEN I PRESS POWER IT SAYS RETRY POWER ON OR IT WONT DO ANYTHING AT ALL. THE BATTERY IS CHARGED ALSO BUT NOW I CANT USE IT AT ALL
We had this problem for about 2 weeks, we discovered that having the camera auto retracted after the "ZOOM ERROR" message, giving the camera couples of light slaps (slap the camera's LCD side and aim the camera down), this fixed the camera right away
I used to get that error all the time with a earlier Fuji FinePix with the slide-over lens cover. If the cover wasn't pushed back completely, the lens would extend only so far and then give an error. Make sure that there's nothing (dirt, hair) on any of the lens surfaces and make sure the lens is fully extending when you do turn the zoom on. Don't let anything touch or bump the zoom while it's moving, either.
Not sure if this will help, since you have a different model. This is what worked for me, though.
