Are you using an anti-virus? If so, it may be Symantec / Norton.... It is probably the source of your problem. Un-install it in the "Add/Remove Programs" through the Control Panle.

Some computers can be slow or short of hard drive space for quite simple reasons.
Windows and other program hide temporary files in lots of different places
The best option is not always a program or utility and if you want to do as much as you can for FREE like I do then you have a few options.

1. First you need to be in windows explorer.

2. Click TOOLS and FOLDER OPTIONS

3. Now click the VIEW tab

4. Tick the Show Hidden Files And Folders option
Unpick Hide Protected Operating System Files (it may warn you but you can ignore it)

5. Click APPLY then OK

6. NOTE some files may not delete this is OK Also DO NOT DELETE the folder itself where mentioned for cleaning.

7. Using windows explorer go into the WINDOWS folder and look for a directory called TEMP (it is possible there may be more than one)

8. Select all the contents and delete them. Do the same for any other temp folder e.g. temp000

9. Now navigate to Documents and Settings
There are quite a few folders in here that can be cleaned up

10. Look for folders named "Local Settings" In there you will find more TEMP folders that can be cleaned out

11. Now look inside the Temporary Internet Files. Delete anything EXCEPT cookies. Otherwise passwords for some sites you have stored may need you to type the password again.

12. Do this for each user / profile you see.

13. Now check the C: drive itself and see if there are any Temp folders and clean those out too

To prevent accidental deletion of any files windows needs you should go back to step (4) and change the two settings back to their original

It may well be some form of virus or spyware.

It may also be that you have too many applications running at once eg. lots of toolbars and instant message typ programs.

It can also happen on graphic intensive applications.

You should rule out nasty stuff first.

    MBAM !

for a free one its pretty darned good !

From a CLEAN computer download and put on a flash drive.

Copy to your DESKTOP on the suspec computer.

Run it but dont change any options just use what it offers.

When its done let it clean anything it finds.

Its where I always start with an infected machine.

As for antivirus AVOID Norton or Mcafee but try the AVG FREE version MBAM should clean up without buying

Only continued use would require purchase As for too many applications that would be up to you to decide what you REALLY need and dont. Most toolbars are a waste of both time and space and can hog computers down. Maybe a good clean up is in order ?

It may just be a "leaking application"

These are badly coded programs that dont release memory when they should and just keep taking more to do the same job.

    May I suggest you download
    "hijackthis"

It is a program that can make a report on what you have running in such a way that you can post that information to certain sites and experts there will look at it.

They will then give you reccomendations as to how you can remove programs or fix some issues that may be upsetting your computer.

Dont post the log here but follow the nstructions and help the program offers to send it to one of the sites it will offer you.

If you understand startup lists you may even be able to spot som things yourself that you dont want to run and disable them from hijack this.

How to recover my files from HD? I have Western Digital External hard Drive 500 GB.It was nearly full, such there was only 50 gb free space. Day by day it worked slow and one day It stopped working, not...

First thing first - STOP using your WD drive immediately! If you continue using the disk drive, you significantly increase the risk that the files you want to recover will be lost forever due to overwritten. Every new file or action will take up more "free space" and reduce your chances of retrieving your deleted files from WD. The next step - get a good HDD data recovery software to retrieve the data as most as possible.

Ok check you have enough RAM the more the better, Check how much hard drive space is left, on your 60GB drive, sometimes if there isn't a large amount of space ..like 10 - 15GB you can have problems. Actually I would also suggest you try another program to record to your PC. try Dscaler this is simply the best there is. http://deinterlace.sourceforge.net/ Even though it says for TV, it is the BEST recording program out there and works with most input devices.

I need to add storage to my older dell dimension 3000. The 80 g hd is full and I am looking for a simple solution to add more space.

first remove any extraneous applications, and archive old data to a cd. Then run "Disk cleanup" and defrag drive. after that and if still not enough space, buy an external drive and follow installation instructions. Cheap fix.

HP Pavilion dv5215 PC Notebook running very slow, but virus scans are clean as are spyware/adware. backed up 80 gb HD to 500 GB external HD and it took 36 hrs. everything is slow; bootup, going to apps,...

What did you scan the system with?

I would download, install and scan with Malware Bytes just to make sure the system is clean. If there's anything on that machine MB will find it and kill it.

Post back with your results and we'll explore additional possibilities if your PC is indeed totally clean.

Thank you for your help last time

256 mb of memory is not very much. It's the bare minimum you can get by with running Windows XP. Adding more would certainly be an improvement.
Only 1 gig of free space left on an 80 gig hard drive is not much room for Windows to work with. I would definitely try to get rid of or back up some files to make more room. You should also run a system clean up and do a defragmentation of the hard drive.

You should keep your anti virus software up to date if you have one installed. If not you can go HERE and run Trend Micro's Houscall on your PC. Viruses and Spyware will bog down a system and cause it to run extremely slow.
