SOURCE: how do i flash my generac 5000 power plus generator

I had the same problem. The engine was running fine but there was only about 1.2 volts coming out of the generator on each leg. I decided to try flashing the field first since it doesn't cost any money. I used a 12 volt dc car battery, and a extension cord. You do not use the green ground wire. you hookup the male end of the cord to the female receptical of the generator outlet. With the generator running you then hookup first the white wire to the battery, now with the black wire you connect it to the battery for about 5 seconds. when I did this my circuit breaker popped and so I reset the breaker and checked the voltage and it actually worked I now get 120 volts ac. It actually worked but be carefull and hope this helps.

If it is new and under warranty, talk to Generac about getting it fixed.

If it is old and unused, it probably needs fuel system cleaned out. Carb needs to be removed and cleaned inside and out, fuel lines need flushing, filter changed and if it has an automatic choke, it needs to be checked because it sounds like it is stuck on.

well I have a special flasher unit but I believe you can put 12 volts to the brushes while it's running. That should do it.
