I have a Maxtor Personal Storage and I am

I have a Maxtor Personal Storage and I am connecting to it thur through USB 2.0 It gives me a message Can not start Code 10.

I think that your USB driver in your WindowsXP is corrupted, what u can do now is to uninstall and reinstall the USB driver. But 1st please make sure your XP must be Service Pack 1 or above.
1) Goto Devices Manager, it is located in Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager.
2) Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers, uninstall all the USB Root Hub seen from the list.
3) Restart the computer and then plug in your USB devices then let the WindowsXP auto reinstall the USB for u.

If this not solved your problem, then try to install the USB driver from website (availability 2009Oct06): http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_USB2_V270p1-L-M.zip
or u can google it.

Another possibility is your device maybe spool so windows cannot recognise it, what u can do is try to plug your device in other PC and see whether it is recognised by the PC or not.

The error 10 is an indicator of a drive gone bad. But, there are a few on there that say they were able to get them working again. If you device is under warranty, try working with Seagate support first for a replacement. If you have data on them, you may need a recovery specialist to salvage that data.

Try this:

1. Plug Maxtor External Hard Drive into your computer
2. Go To Computer
3. Right click on the Drive
4. Click Properties
5. Go To Tools
6. Run an Error Check.

this message comes mostly due to the nonavailability of the drivers. so i would request you to first install the drivers of your maxtor personal storage 3100 to your DELL studio computer, then connect your maxtor storage to your DELL computer. this should fix your fix your issue.

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If it doesn't make any unusual sounds and doesn't show up in BIOS - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.  if it is recognized with full capacity and only files are unreadable - try to scan it with demo version of some software like R-Studio or GetDataBack.

Try some other USB device (memory-stick, printer, camera) in the USB slot in the Vista computer, just to "prove" that Vista will recognize _any_ USB device connected to that slot.
