If i had known the manufacturer and the type of your card reader, i would have started with finding the drivers for the device. Is there any light on the device when plugged in the notebook.
But you better try this......................

- check the cable that connects your notebook and the card reader, replace it with a new one.
- try to uninstall the device in the control panel and restart your computer
- if the above fails, visit the mfg's site for the drivers
- and if all these fail, i assume the device to be dead.
