yes you could simply format the harddrive in Fat32 using your macos that would be the best solution but don`t forget to backup your data by copy pasting the files on your mac or something else and after that to move them on the external hdd again to be available on the windows machine

It should be in My Computer after you plug it in. If not, then go to control panel and search for new hardware. Click on system in control panel it should be listed under usb. Maybee it needs a new driver.

First, check you hard drive as follows:
*Download Seatools For DOS (free) from my link; in the site screen, click "DOWNLOADS" tab, then "Seatools For DOS". Burn it to a CD. Reboot with it in your drive. In the screen that appears, first check that SMART has (or has not) been tripped. If it has been tripped, your drive is failing. Then click the upper left corner of the screen for the short test and let it run. It will notify you either Pass or Fail. This is from Seagate Corp. but will test all other drives, not just Seagate.
If your drive passes as good, the chances are that your motherboard is failing/failed. Try swapping your cables as you stated, but I don't think that will help. If you have an extra hard drive you can swap it to test, but if it is empty you will need some kind of operating system installation disk to see if you can load an OS on it. If so, then the hard drive is bad.

Run CHKDSK/F straight away and back up your data.
Fit a new hard drive and format then install your OS on it. Install driver updates from hp.com and finally update windows.
Restore your data.

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

your HDD may be bad. I have had a number of HDD that appear fine in the BIOS but won't format either via the install disk or separately via a Linux boot disc.(You can somtimes hear them clicking on and off [seeking])

If you are mad keen on the drive, then D/L 'Hirens Boot Disc' and boot into the DOS mode (it also has a Mini XP mode).and use the HDD format utlity 'killdisk'. This will remove anything on the drive, format it and set it up ready for a fresh install.

If Hirens Boot Disk can't see the SATA drive then its stuffed.. for sure..

I cant install vista OS on this MBD , by sata HDD

You must enter setup at boot and select the CD/DVD as first boot. Then ensure that the BIOS settings have SATA enabled. When CD/DVD is first boot watch the screen for 'press any key to boot from cd' message is displayed. The boot screen will say how to enter setup. Typical buttons are F2, Delete, F1, F10 -you did not say which manufacturer. OEM trumps mobo maker with BIOS setup.

Installation problem

Replace the hard drive with a new one. IT takes a standard IDE 2.6" laptop drive - I would try newegg.com they have pretty good prices probably about $100 for a 120gb drive.

The hard drive is under the 3x4" cover on the bottomn of the machine.
