My KAWS850J does not drain or spin, probably due to clogging.

I have a KAWS850J that does not drain or spin. I am pretty sure that the problem is a clogged drain due to material from a rug we were attmpting to wash. I have removed all of the water from the inside and believe that I need to get access to the drain. Is the most likely place that the drain would be clogged at the bottem, inside of the machine, and if so, how do I get access to that drain port? Or do I need to access from the bottem or the back of the machine?

Thanks for the info. I have cleaned the drain at the bottom back of the machine, and the input and output of the pump. I have also removed the pump and cleaned material from the internal impeller of the pump so that it now seems to rotate freely. I re-installed the pump, let a small amount of water flow into the washer, and then attempted to activate the spin/drain cycle. Nothing happened on any spin cycle. Before we emptied the water and clothes from the machine the agitator was still working when the spin/drain cycle failed, so I do not believe that the motor is gone. There must be some relay or automatic switch that disables the spin/drain function when the pump is jammed. Any other suggestions how to re-activate this function?

    Thanks,

    Rich

The motor was running and the agitator was functioning after the drain/spin failed, so I believe that the motor is OK. There is no sound, nothing happens when I switch to any spin/drain cycle. The motor is not running.

There is no pump pulley on my KitchenAid KAWS850L because ther is no pulley.

As I say, I have removed the pump, cleaned it out and it rotates freely now - although I cannot "spin" the impeller. I re-installed it and still no function. When the drain/spin cycle failed to function and the machine was full of water, the agitator still functioned so I do not believe that the motor is bad. I cannot run the motor now because it will not run until it completes a water fill cycle and I prefer not to fill the tub again and have to empty it by hand if I don't have to.

I suppose that the lid switch might be bad, but it seems too coincidental that when the pump became jammed that the lid switch failed at the same time.

Don't you have to remove the entire cabinet on the KitchenAid in order to get at the lid switch, or can you get to it by removing the back panel? I don't believe that the top or front can be removed.

Before replacing the lid switch would you recommend that I first go through the fill cycle to see if the agitator works? If it doesn't then that would make the case for a bad lid sitch.

Is there any interconnect circuit between the pump and the spin that defeats the spin function if the pump becomes jammed on the KitchenAid?

    Thanks,

    R.

KitchenAid KAWS850JQ does not spin or drain. There is no sound - nothing happens.

I cleaned rug lint material from the drain hoses, removed the pump and cleaned material from the pump's impeller which now moves freely, and re-installed the pump. Still nothing happens in any spin cycle.

After the failure to drain/spin the motor still would run the agitator before I emptied the water and clothing. Since I have not been able to get any advice that offered a solution thus far, I am going to fill the tub with more water to see if the agitator will work and if, just maybe, the spin/drain function might work.

If the agitator works and the spin/drain does not, do you have any other solution?

Besides the possibility of a bad lid switch - which this effort should verify - do you know if there is any other automatic switch that might disable the spin/drain when the pump becomes jammed?

This comment was the first that I posted. I have done considerable since then:

I have cleaned out debris (lint material from a rug) from the drain at the bottom back and from the inlet and outlet to the pump. I removed the pump and cleaned material from the impeller so that the pump now rotates freely. I re-installed the pump and still no spin/drain cycle. Nothing happens.

I have just filled the tub - again - and verified that the agitator does function, hence the motor is good. The spin/drain still does not function.

Does this leave only the lid switch as the cause? Or is there some other automatic switch that disables the spin/drain when the pump is jammed? It just seems too coincidental that the lid switch would fail at the very same time that the pump becomes jammed.

I will begin emptying the water in hopes that you can provide a solution before I begin removing the back panel, removing the lid switch, and going to order a new one. If there is another possibility, I would like to know before I unnecessarily remove and order a new switch.

    Thank you.

You are going to have to get into the machine and get to the pump and clean out the debris from there? Do you have the tools and ability to do that?

If the motor does agitate the the lid switch is fine. It should drain next, which is pump time....Is the pump all back together nice and tidy? Wires all back on? That is the next sequence, for the pump to pump out the tub, then spin...?

You would have to pull the back off of the unit to gain access. The drain wont be clogged, it is most likely the pump. what probably happened was material from the rug got sucked into the pump and wrapped around the fan that pushes the water out of the washer.good luck

If it doesn't pump water out or spin, check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follows:

If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. If the pump belt is broken or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt.

If the motor isn't running, the lid switch may be defective. If so, the washing machine can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

If you cannot spin the impeller then the pump is bad. However, you should be able to access the lid switch from the back.

Hi

This issue usually occurs due to kinked drain pipe, clogged drain filter or drain pump. First make sure that the drain is not clogged and remove clogs if present. If no visible lint is present then remove the lower front access panel to check the drain filter and drain pump for any clogs, you'll need to clean the drain filter and drain pump completely. Hope this helps... Please post back for any further assistance.

I have water leaking on the floor due to a clogged defrost drain (probably) but I can't locate the drain on either side. Checked under the bottom compartments on both sides. Water is turned off and still...

You have to take everything out of the freezer side and remove back panel. There are 2 white hex screws around where the second shelf normally is. Top half (where fan is) comes off first, then bottom half comes off (it may be stuck if coils are frozen, let defrost a little). You will see stainless steel drain pan below coils. Also could be ice maker water supply or water chiller behind lower drawers on refridge side.
