1. Double Click on HP director to start it up. Look for "HP Director" on your desktop (the screen in front of you). It is usually an icon that materializes after you install your printer. (It may look slightly different with different models.

2. Scan the document by clicking "Scan."

3. Select "Save to File." (You can set up a folder ahead of time so you know where to find the document or photos once they are scanned). Often times the computermag-glass_10x10.gif will create a default "scanned documents" folder and organize them by saving them on the date scanned.

4.Click scan and then wait for box to appear.

The software will prompt you to save the file. Put it in the folder you created (you can see the path/folder). Give it a name you will remember.

Then click "Save"to finalize it. The document should be in the folder that you designated.

Hope this helps

How do I get the hp to scan a document onto my computer so I can send in an email attachment

Here is what you do... Simple method, Scan the document and save it say on the desktop, usually as a JPG. it doesn't really matter. Then you go to your send email and write the body of the text. Then look for the word ATTACH Click that and a Browse window will ask where the file is... show it where to go and click on it... This will "Attach" that "document" to your email. you will see it loading the attachment and when ready you can then send it.
A more sophisticated way is to use a program that has the scanner interface setup such as MS Word, then one can scan into that and save as a word document and attach that.
Whenever I send documents I always convert them to PDF format, with a program DoPDF, (Download link below) so nearly everyone has Adobe Reader so everyone can "See" it. This ensure most people will be able to read it irrespective of what word processor they use.

  1. Scan the item and save as a file
  2. Open a new email either on your PC email client, (ie, Outlook or thunderbird,...) or the web based email client you use (ie. Gmail, hotmail, etc.).
  3. Attach the scan to the email (they ALL have a means of attaching items to them.)
  4. Send
If you are looking to attach the text directly into an email, not as an attachment, you will need to install your HP software to do Optical Character recognition that came with your printer or from HP.Com, then scan then convert the scanned file. the only problem is you will need to correct the OCR errors, and there can be many.

Hope this helps.

Several ways to control your scanner:

From this HP link

Scan settings include resolution, output type, and file type. These settings can be changed using HP Director.
  1. Open HP Director, if it is not already open:
    • Windows 2000: Click Start , click Programs , point to HP , and then click HP Director .
    • Windows XP: Click Start , click All Programs , point to HP , and then click HP Director .
  2. In the Select Device list, select your product, if it is not already selected.
  3. Click Settings , and then point to Scan Settings & Preferences .
  4. Click the scan setting menu that corresponds to the type of file you are scanning.
    • Scan picture settings : Designed for scanning pictures, including any type of non-text image, such as a drawing, logo, or photograph
    • Scan document settings : Designed for scanning documents
    • Scan preferences : Control scanning preferences, such as automatically straightening crooked images
    • Button settings and Scan to... setup : Control the defaults for the scanner buttons on the control panel of the product
After selecting the appropriate menu, the corresponding window opens.

Scanning Problems

I would first make sure that you have latest driver update. MS Word is very particular about how it reads things back in. I would try saving the scan as a text file or PDF instead and then open them in Word. Hope this helps!
If this solution was helpful to you, will you please rate the solution? Thanks!

Did you tried with any OCR software to convert the Scanned imaged (jpeg) to Word Documen?.Always if you scan anything to an image, it will scan in JPEG format that will consume lot of memory.Scan with OCR(Optical Character Recognition) Software and that will Convert JPEG to word Document which will fix the problem.
The OCR software that i Recommend is ABBY Fine Reader.
